Yesterday I was weedeating around the yard when I struck a hidden fire ant mound. I was bit about 6 or 7 times and didn't think much of it. Around 20 mins later, my face and neck really started itching. BAD. I then soaked myself down with the waterhose which didn't do any good. I then ran into the house and took a shower with soap which didn't help either. I also had some yucca and cactus that had sprayed my face when the weedeater hit them and I thought maybe that was the cause of my itch. It then dawned on me that I may be having a reation to the fire ant bites. At this point my tounge was starting to swell up and I felt like I had Novacaine in my mouth. I took some Benadryil and layed down and about 20 mins later I was fine. But anyway......be careful while you are in the woods because you never know what may happen. This was the first time I had ever had a reaction like this with ant bites.

Benadryl is good to keep around. It just might save your life one day - allergic reactions can be serious!

Pour gasoline on them. No more ants and you don't have to mow that spot anymore because it kills the grass.

And then it goes back into the oil table and is recycled, just like rainwater!

I keep a bottle of the liquid Benadryl (1@home, 1@camp) around at all times, for just this reason.

I have always been highly allergic to ants. Benadryl works!! And it doesn't make you tired if you really need it grin

After the bite when you're better.

Mix 1 cup of Pine Sol in a gallon of warm water and pour directly on the mound. It's not a long lasting remedy but it kills em dead. Pour slow right in the middle of the mound so it has time to flood deep.

Use baking soda and powdered sugar and make a paste with it,place around mound and they are attracted by the sugar and carry it to queen and it will kill out the mound. They say the baking soda is whats kills them because they can't belch and they just explode, and no I don't have pictures.

1/2 cup of sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons Borax. Can get this at walmart or your wife may have some for doing laundry.
1 1/2 cups warm water

Mix and spray on or around the ants.

Thanks,

If you're that allergic, you should have an epipen. It's a prefilled, auto injection of epinephrine. If you were to get significantly more bites the reaction may be much more severe. Your doctor can prescribe one and insurance should cover a good portion of the cost. I have one because I live in the sticks and cannot get to a doctor or hospital quickly.

This is sound advice. Epipen stays either in my truck or in my pack.

+1, benedryl should be taken immediately in this situation. Epi is always good to have around. Keep one in the truck and at the house.

Ouch. That's scary stuff when you start having a reaction like that.

I'm allergic to bee stings and when I get bit by a ton of Mosquitos. My tongue and throat swells but it's slowly so I always have benedryl around me. If I know there's a high possibility to be stung/bit I'll take some ahead of time. Only once when I was 9 I had to go to the hospital. That was from multiple bee stings. Glad you're ok. Some people grow out of it or become allergic at older age. Could have been bad.

Even if you are not allergic, but especially if you are, it's always a good idea to keep some of the dissolvable Benadryl strips in the house and/or glovebox. It works quicker than the pills. With these types of reactions though, you might want to see your doctor about prescribing you an Epi-pen. Glad you ended up being ok.

Benadryl is good stuff.
One morning I rolled out from under the truck and into bull nettle. After the screaming, my wife gave me some as a precaution (she gives that stuff out like candy). I don't know if it helped, but I had a nap and woke up the 20 hours later.
