I have done a lot of waterfowl hunting but never shot a mallard drake. In Texas, where is the best place to go for mallards? Thanks

If you're like me you hunt the Eagle Lake area , mallards are rare. Go north TX after the split. There are guides that post on here that can fix you up. My first duck in Garwood was a mallard hen. 90 points
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Most of the places we hunt here around Abilene do not hold mallards either. Pintails, widgeon, gadwalls, teal, redheads, hoodies, spoonies and ring neck are all thick but mallards, wood duck and canvasbacks are very few and far between.

I'd gladly swap them out for a couple pintails.

Chances of solid mallard bags increase the further north of Dallas you go. Doesn't matter if it's directly north, east, or west of the metroplex.
I used to think mallards were "overrated" that was until I started hunting where they were, definitely one of the funest ducks to hunt, and I understood the hype.

Just shoot spoonies, that's what they do in CTX.

We used to kill quite a few on EM. But I haven't hunted out there in over a decade. The crowds just got to big. I wouldn't hunt anywhere around the metro mess anymore. I may do some hunting on the ponds around the farm up in Missouri this year. They always seem to have a bunch of ducks and geese still there in November when I'm up there deer hunting.

Just shoot spoonies, that's what they do in CTX. They're not mallards? Find flooded vegetation after the first split and you will find Mr. Greenhead.

I have only shot one and I had to go with Andrew @ Ducks R Us up in Telephone, TX. Ive hunted many years in central Texas and I have seen less than 5 while hunting. Give him a call. He will get you a mallard.

I've shot close to 1000 birds in texas and maybe only 20 mallards. Just have to go north or Far East, they're not everywhere boys

Ltmfh that's all fine and dandy you shot some banded mallards but has nothing to do with this thread, pretty sure everyone here is talking about shooting mallards in texas. Every one of your birds was harvested in oklahoma. Why don't we all just pack up and go to Stuttgart if we wanna shoot some mallards. Texas birds buddy, not no 3.2 okie greenheads lol

East Texas timber seems pretty good most times, we get a few in central texas on certain bodies of water. I killed about 10 mallards in central texas last year and saw maybe 3 times that many or 4. A buddy shot 2 of a 4 bird group while I was still throwing out decoys. We got there late. Never get in a big hurry when its private land. I would tell you what lake to go to in my area to kill a mallard and many other species but all these entirely too serious waterfowlers get upset when you name lakes. If public is so bad hunt private. Rarely do I not kill at least one bird on private.
