Based on finding them in the field where I shoot them or by the buzzards the next day. I don't have thermals to find them after I shoot them. Until last week I didn't have a night vision scope to shoot them with either or a suppressor. Weapon mounted lights only. Dead is dead, but it's like everyone says "if you don't have a picture you didn't kill it". We hunt out of a truck and after the shooting starts we start chasing them to stay on them. It always amazes me how far hogs can run after they've been shot when you're chasing them vs not chasing them. We'll probably stop doing that after we get another night vision scope to use. While I have personally not killed hundreds of hogs by myself. The core group of two or three guys I hunt with have killed hundreds of hogs. We kill hogs all the time that look like they've been shot before. A couple even look like they've been hit by a car/truck. We see other types of scars too, maybe fight scars IDK. We don't do autopsy's on them to figure it out.
edit: the one guy use a 6.8 and the other a .308. Of coarse they have much better luck putting them down regardless of bullet type. Ear hole or spine shot doesn't really matter what type bullet you're using they'll drop right there. To everyone: I do not mean to come off as a know it all or a snob by any stretch. However when I see "Advice" given when I know it contradicts my experience, I speak up and ask questions. I have tried most ammo on the commercial market today and personally killed close to 2000 Hogs now. What I have found works second best in a .223, is 55gr. FMJ with lead core from a 1/9 twist barrel traveling at 3100 fps at the muzzle. First choice would be the Barnes in light weight form, but results are very similar to the FMJ. I have to look for far less Hogs with my current gear selection. There are reasons why this selection works great on Hogs and not so good on Deer and other thin skinned animals. But I have grown tired of the naysayers who talk, instead of do, take over the threads with their personal attacks and insecurities only to try and reinforce their decision on gear based on what they read in Guns and Ammo. I have been said to "Spray and Pray" with my shooting. I have never seen someone have their prayers answered on such a regular basis. Now the video I posted entitled "Imperial Hogs", was towards the end, Spray and Pray.

No doubt a fmj will kill them. Just how long will they take to die and what kind of blood trail to find them. Like any animal a central nervous system/brain hit no blood trail required. Me, I like to skin and quarter them then take them home in an ice chest so I need to find them. I don't have night vision, thermal vision or a suppressor yet so I shoot the first one behind the ear then try to break shoulders on the rest if I get into a sounder. I prefer a bigger caliber for pigs so I usually hunt them with my R15 in .30RAR but if I'm out with my .223/5.56 I'm not going to pass the shot because of it. Then I'm shooting a 64 grain bonded bullet. New barrel in for my other gun, haven't broken it in yet but the 1/7 is for the 70 grain bullets.

Interesting discussion. I am going on my first pig hunt in a few weeks and tried to answer this question and it is like the 9mm/45 debate people all over the place. I am going to bring an assortment of ammo with me and see what works for me. For my AR I will have 55gr FMJ, 75gr Sierra HPBT for sure. I also plan to run my 300AAC upper if I can finish it and get it sighted in given I have to travel for work.
The world ends when you are dead, until then you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man- and give some back.

have taken more shots with video camera than with .223 been using 55gr fmj farthest shot was roughly 50yrds off hand, have bad habit of taking heart lung shot & eyes not what they used to be. that's the only hog that didn't retreave using .223 did the hat on ground were standing, kept eye on were hog was an ran. got to area took bout 5-10 minutes ta find sign of hit. one-two specks of blood. marked it did the grid search found several drops spaced several yards apart. most of blood will stay inside cavity small entry & exit, I may be wrong just what I've seen. spent 45-1hour looking. the other hogs were all closer & retreaved them very little blood. its about worth

There shouldn't really be much debate. A hog is a pretty thick and tough animal. Especially if you insist on using a .223, any bullet should provide both: 1)penetration/weight retention with 2)expansion. If you want to find them.
Varmint bullets don't do both well. FMJs don't do both well.
Bullets like TSXs and many other do.

I use Black Hills 62 grain TSX but just bought some Remington Hog Hammers to try out. They are loaded with the same bullet but about 20 cents a round cheaper.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

He stated he liked his 55gr fmj to come out of the barrel screamimg and barely stable, well thats exactly how E. Stoner designed the weapon. Anyway, it's hard to argue with his success and if others have success with others bullets that's great was well.
As far as"spray and pray", we all have opinions on it but he's not deer or predator hunting or looking for the one shot kill like most may be accustomed to and he's is aiming and hitting his targets fairly regularly on the couple of videos I saw. If he was shooting at one pig four our five times missing it every time and then moving to another pig without hitting it as well and so on then i would call it "spray and pray". Judging by the results I think he is a pretty good shot. What he's doing is making it look easy for what he's trying to do.

I reload my own. I use Sierra 65gr Gamekings. Most of my hog shooting has been done with either a .308 bolt gun or 10mm. However, as I often come across large groups of hogs, I want more rifle capacity to cull a few more per encounter. I have shot one hog with a 75 gr Hornady TAP, but had less than stellar results (could have been the shooter). Since then, I have worked up a load with the 65 gr Sierra Game King Spitzer Boat Tail as mentioned above that will be with me on my next hunt.

Ballistic tip varmint bullets are a bit too explosive, fmj or a good soft point will suffice.

Since then, I have worked up a load with the 65 gr Sierra Game King Spitzer Boat Tail as mentioned above that will be with me on my next hunt. The heavier projectiles are designed for longer ranges and when aimed at thin skinned "skinnies". Not Hogs. A bonded, lighter projectile traveling very fast works better for me. Kills what it is aimed at and if it passes through, it will have a lot less chance of damaging anything of value. During the trial and error days years ago, when I was trying the heavier bullets and other options, I had often thought 5.56mm was best left for the battle field. However... I stuck with it and made my ammo search the main priority and came to my conclusions that I regularly share on this board and to friends when I am asked my opinion. If I had an abundance of 6.5 Grendel ammo, I would be using that chambering as when my Grendel hits a Hog, it makes a loud thunderous bang like no other...and I like that.

A bonded lighter bullet......... FMJ bullets....... just what bullet are you using? Barrel length? Twist? Contour/profile? Type rifle? Powder? Primer? Which case? FPS achieved at what distance. Pictures of wound channels. Pictures of bullet fragments recovered. Distance of shots/hits. Like the fellows from Missouri say, show me.

I picked up some cheap Monarch soft points 55gr as a back up ammo. Anyone ever try these?
I'll still be going into town to get a better suited bullet for the hunt.

I use hand loads with 60gr Nosler Partitions. I use these for deer and hogs. If I'm hunting predators or varmints I will use some cheap steel case fmj ammo.

I thought we had already crossed that bridge in the PM you sent me. Every 55gr FMJ I recovered looked like a Banana and was seemingly 100% weight retention. I use a 16" AR15 chambered in 5.56mm Built by Hooper Ordnance. 9 twist barrel Light contour with flutes. The only time I am prepared to give to this, is showing videos of Hogs dropping. I have those already edited for you. I can also show you a video of a Hog being popped in the head straight on by a 300BLK using Hog Hammers. Hog dropped, then got up and ran. Then I killed the Hog with a 5.56mm. The only other choice I would go with that is better for General Purpose killing, is the 6.5 Grendel. 7.63x39 is ok but lacks medium range accuracy and trajectory. Same with the 6.8SPC. Video later today of nothing but 5.56mm carnage.
