Sporterized Mauser.
In 8mm-06 Ackley Improved caliber which just reams out the original chamber a little bit to allow a full length 30-06 case necked up to 8mm. I believe the mag box had to be modified a little to fit the extra length as well.
The original Millitary 98 Mausers were chambered in 8x57 Mauser.
Looks like it also has a Timney Trigger with a Remington 700 style safety as well as the big Mauser safety on the back of the bolt.

Well that kinda makes sence to me becouse the guy that I got it from said he never fired it personally but had said that the guy he got it from shot a 30-06 from it. Sporterized Mauser.

Actually your rifle is a Sporterized Vz-24, a Czech rifle based on the German 98 Mauser. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vz._24I don't know anything about the 8mm-06 AI. AI cartridges are generally the same as the parent case with the exception that the shoulder angle is changed to allow more case capacity. As far as I know, you would have to make brass and reload. I am sure buying hand loaded shells for that would be expensive, I would doubt if any manufacturers made them.

I feel that the wisest thing I need to do with it is take it to a good gunsmith and have them go thru it for me and get the truth there. Ive never taken anything to a gun smith what could I exspect to pay to have it gone thru?

Oh wow. A 30-06 has a .308" caliber bullet, and 8mm is .323", so shooting a 30-06 through it would cause the bullet to bang around the length of the barrel. I doubt you could hit the broad side of barn doing that.

Going to a gun smith is a good idea. He can check everything out and make sure nothing is fubar and safe to shoot. I don't know how much, I have never been to a gun smith before.

Unless you reload, that rifle is pretty useless to you. But luckily you can get it rebarreled to just about any caliber you want.
Now for the bad news, all the value went out of that rifle when they sporterized it. There are some exceptions, depending on if you can document the smith that did the work, the manufacturer of the barrel, or if it had a fancy high grade wood stock. I have a few customized mausers, and I just bought one in 270 just like yours for $180 from a gun shop. However that rifle is much more valuable in it's original military condition and trim.

Removing the "old gun value", those are some really strong and well cycling actions aren't they? A good action to build a custom rifle from?

That's a CZ made, intermediate length Mauser. Most were 8x57mm but some were made for export (mostly S. America) in 7x57mm.
Unless the profile of the barrel was changed, it is a sporter barrel.

The 98 Mausers are, but I don't know anything about those czech made Vz-24s. I know they were based on the 98s, but I don't know if parts swap out between them.

I built a 257 Wby for Stickchunker on here off of a Vz-24. Great action 100x better than a Yugo or Turk. Would not hesitate to do another on a Vz. I just won't do another belted magnum on a mauser 98 style action it was a PITA. What the OP has is a perfect platform to work into a custom gun. Not a 8mm-06 fan though. Now a 6.5-06 or a 338-06 would really get me worked up. I have a love affair with Mauser actions, so I am probably biased. If the OPs rifle was mine, I would put a commercial bolt shroud on it, get a boyds thumbhole stock, bed the action, put a Timney or Bolds trigger with a side safety on it and see how she ran.

Mauser actions are renowned for their design and strength. One of the smoothest actions ever made, or copied. I have owned several rifles rechambered to AI cartridges, and I'm curious if this is a true AI or just a designation for a wildcat??

I am curious too, there are quite a few different improved variations of the 8mm-06. Chances are it is a true AI. The real killer is dies for it are gonna run you over $100.

I've got a G98/40 that was re-chambered to 8mm-06AI...found out the hard way when I shot 8mm Mauser ammo through it and it fire-formed the case.
I took it to a gunsmith and he did a chamber and bore cast and confirmed it was 8mm-06AI. It was about $100.
It will probably cost you about as much to get setup for reloading that round than it would to have the rifle re-barreled into a more common caliber.
I haven't looked in awhile but I couldn't find anyone that would load custom 8mm-06AI ammunition.

I have made arangments today to have it rebarreld, I stopped and talked to the guys at Panther city firearms in ft. worth and Im going to have them rebarrle it for me.We discussed the many options for it and have decided to go with a 270 cal barrel. I want a good reliable cal thats easy to find ammo for, I have no intrest in doing or buying the stuff to reload my own ammo.

Nice. VZ24s make an excellent sporter. They are, by the way, a full-length Mauser action, not intermediate. The M48s, aka Yugoslavian actions are the intermmediate-length Mausers.
