Several years ago my wife shot a pretty nice buck right after a heavy snow fall on a Thanksgiving Day. So I took the buck to my taxidermist with a picture of the deer and my wife and asked him to do a mount just like the photo, just without my wife.
He did an awesome job considering he had never worked with a snow scene or materials before. But now after a few years the snow is turning yellow. At first I was afraid my lab did a number on it but there was no smell and no signs he had messed with the mount and he had never before touched any of the other floor mounts we have. Soon we realized the yellowing was getting bigger and are now thinking it could have been caused by the sunlight coming thru a window.
Obviously we are not sure the cause and my taxidermist is a little bewildered and is going to research a fix. But I thought I might ask some of the taxi experts on THF if they have ever worked with a snow scene and/or had any experience like this. Any ideas on what we can do to remedy the situation.
It is a great looking mount and we certainly want to get it re-done. Just need some advice on what to do.

I had 2 mounts done by the same taxidermist in the same year something similar to this on the skins. One was a life size and one was a pedestal wall mount. One was on the floor and one on the wall. Sunlight might have gotten to one but not the other. I asked my taxi if the hides were sent to a tannery and he assured my they were. He has mounted other deer before and after this with no issues. This happened on deer killed in 2003. It started with in a yr or bit longer after I got them.

this can and will happen in time if the mount is not placed under glass. I would suggest to remove the top coat of the snow and reapply a new one. It's just part of the upkeep of a snow scene.

Might be the glue. Gotta be a non-yellowing on a snow scene.

MikeBillington: so does this happen to most snow mounts?
Does the sunlight play a part in the discoloration or is it just a basic byproduct of the snow material?
Is there any better type material we can use that won't discolor?

Yellowing aside that's a beautiful mount

It's from not being under glass. A case is the only place for snow habitat.

It doesn't look like the snow on the deer itself is turning yellow, if that's the case I think it's the glue
under the snow scene.... Seen it happen before. The easiest snow to use is van dykes snow flock, you apply by misting water from a spray bottle.... Sprinkle snow mist it with water and repeat! When it drys it's pretty hard but looks just snow never had it turn yellow and easy to repair. You can get it from Mckenzie or van dykes taxidermy supply... I know Mckenzie owns van dykes but there's two seperate catalogues. Get some ice crystals to make it look even better

Don't know how to fix it but I can tell you that's one quality floor underneath the mount.

Deer Creek Taxidermy, thank you for your suggestion. I have passed it on to my taxidermist who will be repairing it soon. This was his first ever snow scene so he is not an expert on snow and is looking for a remedy for me.
