Sometimes like if it's a long distance shot ot he's mixed in with a bunch of other deer, you might think it's a doe, until you walk up to it. It's happened on our lease a few times.

OK, I do not understand this...

Isn't a deers' sex determined by its genitals?

You have buck and buck or "antlerless" and "antlerless" only deer tags on your license. Keykey word is antlerless......antlerless is defines as the antlers are not hardened and protruding through the skin. Kinda sounds to me like the actual sex doesn't play into it other than the word buck. IMO

Hmmm....

If I was hunting and I shot what used to be a 10 point buck but he completely lost both antlers in a fight, I can tag it as a doe? I don't think so...

My tags say "Buck" and "Antlerless"

I may be wrong but the way I interpret the rules is

Buck = a deer that's got balls, whether it has antlers or not.

Antlerless = a deer that does not have balls.

I don't know, but can you answer this question?

I can answer it but it might be wrong, haha........if there's proof that the antlers were once protruding through the skin, if it was once a 10 point then I'm sure no skin would be over the antler holes, then I myself would tag it as a buck. How would you know it used to be a 10 point? If you saw the antlers break off in the fight, wouldn't you just not shoot it and avoid the confusion? JMO.....

page 64 of the Outdoor Annual:

"A "buck deer" is a deer with a hardened antler protruding through the skin. A "spike buck deer" is a BUCK with no antler having more than one point. ALL OTHER DEER ARE ANTLERLESS DEER"

Note that it doesn't say anything about what sex the deer is. Gonads or no-gonads, doesn't mean a thing vis-a-vis's the TPW.

Thank you! I was looking for that and i did not have my annual handy...

These laws need revision - the subjectiveness will allow you to interpret them in many different ways.

either it has a horn protruding through the skin or it don't....no interpretation needed.

This is really extreme I know but it does leave the door open to shooting a buck, removing it's antlers and being able to say it had none when you shot it. Anyway, I think I'm done with this topic. I got a buck this year and his antlers were way out of his skin....

It seems pretty obvious to me. It either has antlers, or not. But when in doubt, call the Game Warden.

that would fall back to the proof of sex. Proff of sex must accompany the meat until its final processing place (in so many words)

I would suggest if you blow a deers head off, be sure and leave some sort of proof of sex with the deer...

If it even looks like a person tried and removed then skull cap to hide if it has horns...you better not have a antlerless tag on the deer...
