Well, I was down at the lease this weekend in Palestine. I was walking back from the blind and I noticed on one of our tanks a few ducks. Really didn't think anything of it there are usually a few every now and then. I went in and ate breakfast, while eating I saw my shotgun leaned up in the corner of the room and thought I would actually give the ducks a shot since the deer didnt want to show up. Keep in mind Ive never duck hunted before. Well, I head out to the tank, and creep up to in then go running over the hill. 2 ducks flew up and I start shooting.. BOOM (one down)... BOOM BOOM. The other got away. Well I go to pick him up and he is goregous. So I take a picture of him with my phone and send it to a duck huntin buddy. Come to find out its a wood duck drake. I dont know if thats any good but I think I will seriously start looking into duck hunting. I know jumping a tank isnt traditional way to do it, but I am very intrested in this sport now. I will post some pics of my duck tomorrow.

ALSO, is this duck worth mounting? I went ahead and froze him cause I need someone to show me the right way to clean him. If he is worth mounting. How much is a good price?

I usually like to wait for a look at a few ducks before moutning the first one. If you dont duck hunt then mount him. Wood ducks a 1 of the prettest ducks. Good eatin to. Just flip him on his back, peel back the feathers and fat on his breast and cut the 2 breasy meat out.mmmmm

a good price from a reputable bird taxidermist would be around $225-$250. keep in mind that not all guys are gonna do a good job with birds, since they are processing mostly deer this time of year.

Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

So you've been brought over to the dark side.... Thats Awesome! Pretty soon you'll be getting up at 2am so you can sit in a mudhole and almost crashing the car because you were distracted by ducks flying by.

Congrats on your first duck! That's a great one to start with too. Be careful, duck hunting is addictive. And, there ain't nothing wrong with pond jumpin'.

I am curious though, being that this was a spontaneous hunt, do you have your migratory waterfowl stamp and did you use steel shot?

If not, you'll want to get that taken care of before your next duck hunt.

I do have my stamp!!! I always get it, just in case someone asks to me to go.

Ignorance? I know your suppose to use steel shot. And I guess I chose to break the law. But like I said, wont happen again. I figured I would get dog-piled on for that... I have it taken care of though... thanks for the heads up
