Maybe the release is an attempt to have javelina's compete with hogs, possibly keeping hog populations down?
Or maybe they got sick of hearing how S. Texas hunting is better than N. Texas...
We have had seemingly the same lone Javelina occasionally on gc in Palo Pinto for the last two years. IME it is the opposite when mixing javi's and hogs. From what I have seen when hog numbers go up the javi numbers go down. I managed a 5100 acres ranch where we went on a hog eradication program when the HF went up. Had very few javi's and after killing off over 360 hogs in 2 yrs the javi's started to make a comeback. Javi's numbers also appear to cycle with high then low numbers. Seems like they are group/packed oriented and in close contact and that seems to spread diseases quickly among them. I can remember hunting along the Nueces River in the early 80's in La Salle County and seen two groups one day out of the same blind that had over 50 in one group and over 70 in the other. There was only one small group of 8 feral hogs seen at that time.

About 7-8 years ago, we were on the Triangle ranch in Puducah (Cottle County side) and came across what looked like to small hogs crossing the road. Upon further inspection, they were Javi's.

Definitely javi's. Saw one run over less than a mile from the Lowe's in Abilene season before last.

You and I are not in agreement but what you wrote would make a case for what I was getting at: More Javelinas could mean less hogs? Hogs and Javelinas compete for same or similar resources. In theory you could use less destructive Javelinas to control hog numbers. Examples like yours made me say this -->1 Groups of 50 or 70 Javelinas and only 8 hogs. 2 After removing hogs Javelina made a comeback

Javelinas can not compete with hogs and numbers drop as hog numbers increase IME. There were already Javelinas on the place way before hogs. Javelina numbers will only increase when hog numbers drop from what I have seen. Not going to debate if it was food related or something else due to hogs being increased or removed. Seen it on more than one ranch when hog numbers were taken way down and javelina numbers increased. That example I listed was from 1981 when hogs were very rare in this area. As hog numbers increased javelina numbers went down in that area. The numbers I quoted on the 5100 acres were from 2003-2005. Those 2 ranches were about 8-10 miles apart also.
