Has anyone else noticed more broken horns this year?? And if so what is the reason? I have seen at least 6 bucks, all look healthy and have broken main beams!!

But that might just keep them alive for next year if they have a broken horn....so it might just be a blessing! That is unless some goober shoots a broken deer!

More bucks in the areas so they are fighting more hence breaking more.

Yeah I do understand the fighting and the breaking, but I think that the deer in my area (Taylor count) might have missed some goodness in the horn department this year.

I've only seen 2 this year that were broken up, one was a 10 and still is, but just not as many scoreable inches...and the other an 8 that is now a 6. Haven't seen a young one broken up yet.

There was a story on CNN.com where a deer had jumped through a school window and when it jumped back out it broke of 3 of it's 6 points.

what if all deer had brittle antlers until they turned 4-1/2? and you had just a short time to judge these youthful guys until they started breaking. it wouldn't be as hard for hunters to age a buck. Horns still intact after the rut? Mature buck.
Just a dumb thought.

I think we missed something nutritionally during developement. I'm seeing mature bucks snapped like a twig.

I agree on the nutrition situation. I wonder if it is just confined to the Big Country area? My lease partner also hunts another 1700acres north of Albany and he said this year is the worst year ever for broken mains. We are still seeing some good uns, just every 5th or 6th buck is really broken up.

I have a mineral lick on my place that I replenish several times a year. Since I have started that practice I haven't had any deer with broken antlers.

Haven't seen any with broke tines this year. Guess I'm lucky

Watched this bruiser and a Big 10 beat the crap out of each other for over 20 min and both came out just fine. Well, for about three days and then this guy bought the farm

I hunt about 10mins SE of Albany and have noticed more than usual number of broken horns this year even the 1.5yrs are broken up. I would have to agree there was some nutritional deficiency this year with the horn development.

Seems the same out toward Bracketviile as well. Buck numbers are good but we think less water impacted anter quality as they are fed protein year around

It's that time of year for sure.

My cousin has a buddy at his lease that passed on a very large 10 pt one evening because he thought he was only 4.5. After reviewing video tape from previous years they figured out it was a buck they'd filmed 2 years earlier and he was 4.5 at the time. Needless to say he was a little upset after figuring it out.

He went back to the same stand the next morning and the buck came back out. He was really sick this time as the deer had broken 3 tine off during the night. The buck would have scored between 165-170 had he lowered the boom on him the night before!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Lack of moisture will result in broken tines always. Hense no rain, no food= inferior deer.

I agree with the fellow that made the observation in Young County...I have 4 or 5 on my cameras that are broken up including the 8 (er 7) my son took last weekend.

The worst is an 8 that is now a 6 - lost almost his entire right side except for G1 and a few inches of the base.

We've had lots of rain and lots of food, think they've just been fighting HARD this year.

Earl

My father in law hunts the Spade Ranch said they've seen a lot broken there as well. We keep mineral out for cattle and I've seen deer nosing around them but apparently they didn't get enough of the good stuff.
