Just getting into reloading - I have 2 different rifles - Rem. 700 BDL & Savage Axis, both in 22-250.The twist on the Rem is 1:14, while the twist on the Axis is 1:12. I'm wanting to shoot a 55gr V-MAX. Do you guys think that this load should shoot well out of the Axis? I know I need to get on the range and test them, etc. etc., but I'm just wanting opinions for now. I know that the Rem likes this round, I'm just concerned that the 1:12 twist might not like the 55gr as much. Thoughts ?? I appreciate any input.

I'd bet $5 both rifles will shoot that bullet very well. I ran a 55 gr SGK on a 1:14" twist Savage 12. Before hand loading I tried 45 gr white box Winchester and it shot those very well too.

You're doing good by matching twist rate to bullet weight. But I think one bullet in both twist rates will work just fine.

Be sure to keep your brass separated by gun unless you plan on full length re-sizing.
Neck re-sizing is the way to go for better accuracy down the road.

My Savage shoots 55 grain SGKs and 52 Bergers very well and it is 1:12.

I reload 53 TSX for my 1-in-12 Savage, and it shoots them very well. It does NOT shoot the 60gr that I've tried well.

It also shoots the cheap Winchester 45gr lights out.

Try full length sizing to fit that rifle's chamber. Fire the case in the rifle, measure to the shoulder with a headspace gauge, set the FL die to bump the shoulders .003". This ensures the case has been sized the least amount possible but still making sure it'll go in the chamber, then it will eject after the next firing. The powder charge isn't used to flow the brass but only the .003" and the fuel will be better used to push the bullet.

Go with what Fireman says. I was once a neck sizer, but have now come to understand that you can get better results from what I call 'almost FL sizing', which is what Fireman is describing. If you want to consider that FL sizing is going all the way down to the shellholder, then 'almost FL sizing' is going as close to the shellholder as to get you that desired minimal shoulder bump. Brass will last a lot longer that way, accuracy will improve, and you will probably get rounds with less runout than from just neck sizing.

As for me, I have moved on to using the Lee Collet Die for sizing cases and when I feel the case being a bit too snug in the chamber, I use a Redding Body Die to bump the shoulder back. You can do all that in one step with a Redding Type S FL bushing die, but then you have to match the right bushing with your neck wall thickness. I get better accuracy with the Lee Collet Die.

That said, I am not the accomplished long distance shooter that Fireman and some of the others are, so my vote should not count as much as theirs does. But get a Lee Collet Die, which is inexpensive, and try it.

I use lee collet sizer on my 22-250's and other bolt guns. It loads accurate enough for what I do. I have to keep my rem and savage loads separate.
