I will caution you, it's against most city ordinances to shoot a air rifle inside the city limits. It doesn't stop a ton of people from doing it, most people just don't know that.
That being said. The only pellet gun I've ever shot is my father old Benjamin, circa 1965 or so. It's what I learned to shoot on, and is exceptionally accurate to 25 yards or so. I don't know if their new stuff is as good, but that's a fine rifle.

The RWS model 34 is the equivalent to the Ruger 10/22. Pretty much the gold standard in Air Rifles. With that said, there are a lot of good air rifle available. I have killed a lot of squirrels with my Beeman GS1000 and RWS 34.

I grew up shooting a Benjamin pump .22. There was no such thing as a safe bird in our yard.
Now, I own two adult RWS rifles, one in .177 and one in .22. They are both accurate out to thirty yards or so. Both are fitted with scopes designed for the odd recoil of air rifles. As a squirrel and raccoon killer, the .22 is far superior to the .177.
If you primarily shoot targets, I'd recommend a .177. If you want a pest or vermin rifle, get a .22.

Back in high school, a friend had 2 pellet rifles. His dad always told us they were the equivalent of a 22. I don't think they were, but they were still really good air rifles. We had a tennis ball sized knot on a rope hung from a tree at 100 yards. We could hit that knot with every shot using iron sights. Don't know what brand the rifles were, but there are accurate air rifles out there.

What do you want to spend? The "best" guns are PCP (Pre Charged Pneumatic) and a setup for your first rifle is not cheap, as it includes a $700 carbon fiber air tank for refills. Since the better guns start at about $800, the initial investment is $1500-2000. Because of the cost, I content myself with Beeman and RWS springer air guns. For back yard plinking, the Beeman R7 can't be beat, as it's quiet, accurate, and generally a joy to shoot. The bad news is that it's quiet because the velocity is low, about 600 fps, and is too anemic for serious hunting. The Beeman R1, the RWS 48/52 and the RWS 54 are accurate, powerful, and very hard on telescopic sights. Without fail, buy only scopes that are made for air guns, as they will quickly destroy even very high quality scopes that are not designed for the unique stress generated by springer air guns.
FWIW, I own a Weihrauch 30S ( same as the Beeman R7), an RWS 52 and an RWS 460. Resale on the better quality RWS and Beeman guns is quite good, if you don't overpay. If you're willing to make the initial investment, the RWS 54 is pretty tough to beat. For considerably less cash, go with the break barrel RWS 34-36 or similar.

I could just throw a rock at that close distance. I've got an old red rider BB gun that's fairly accurate at 50 yards. It's not going to kill a squirrel at that distance but it'll scare them when it hits. Granted, I have to aim a few feet high, but it's still accurate. Believe it/don't believe it, I don't really care.

I think I'm going with an RWS 34 in .22, used if I can find one. Iv done some research and for a German rifle( air) you can't beat the price, also It is just a sleek looking air rifle.

Like Syncerus says. Buy one made for the air gun. Yeah, airguns play merry old hell with ordinary scopes due to the whiplash recoil. Leepers makes inexpensive scopes for pellet rifles that are quite popular. I'm an RWS man myself; I have a model 34 and a model 48. But I saw this good buy on Gamo rifles on WOOT this morning: http://sport.woot.com/plus/gamo-refurbished-air-rifles-5?ref=gh_sp_5_wp_1

MeanGreen85 mentioned the Nitro at amazon. He is absolutely right. Benjamin and Crossman have merged. The offspring is the new Nitro gun that replaces a spring gun. Uses a Nitro cylinder. Quieter, about 95 decibels, more powerful, and more consistant. Crossman has the Viper Nitro and Benjamin has Trail XL and Genesis. This summer expect to see the new Nitro II. The cylinder has been turned around to give more power. Check this out on the Benjamin web site. Or look at the videos on youtube.
