Everybody knows about the train in Durango but not that many know the Cumbres and Toltec RR that runs thru Chama. We drove thru Chama on the way to Pagosa Springs from Albuquerque some years back on a family vacation.
Even now, at the mention of Chama someone in the family will start singing...( "Chama,Chama,Chama...Chama, New Mexico"...(think Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon" and it will come to you!)
Thanks for the picture and a chance to remember a fun time!

The Chama area is our favorite part of NM. We have ridden the train a few time but mostly enjoy following it with our camera as it works its way up and through the mountains. The 2012 trip was special because we took the Sunset Special. Got to see many of the canyons in the "Magic Light" of the evening plus there was a lot of wildlife out that time of day. Wife knew we were going to ride again that summer but the evening train was a surprise to her. So was getting to ride in the Parlor Car with beer and wine. Apparently the "Sunset Special" was a success because they feature it again this year on several Saturdays. For you folks with kids/grandkids, they now have their Cinder Bear Special. My son took our grandkids last summer on the Cinder Bear and they had a blast. http://www.cumbrestoltec.com/cinder-bear-experience

Some friends of the family have property that borders the railway, at one of the tunnels. Their property is in Colorado and butts right up to the NM border. We stayed there for a few days once and got to watch the train come and go each day. Lots of elk in that area too.

Chama is one of my favorite areas in the lower 48. If I was well to do, that is a place I would have a summer cabin I think.

Yes, we have been there many times and seen the train come rolling through. It's a very cool place. We've hunted just North of there and would come to town to clean up and have a cold beer at the High Country Inn. Good food, good beer and good music.

Got my first jar of Olives stuffed with Jalapeno in Chama! I won't go into detail about how long ago that was.......but back then they didn't have 'em in any of the grocery stores here. ...and 10-4 on the train! Done both Durango & Silverton and Cubres Toltec! My first wedding night was spent at the Elkhorn Lodge in Chama NM. Before I sold the property in Pagosa Springs CO, we always came through and stopped at Chama..... http://www.elkhornlodge.net/
