My daughter is in 4H with my son. Earlier in the week, I found out she was awarded a "White Tail" deer hunt this coming season for her efforts and hard work on a local ranch. Only condition is that the rancher has a strict rule....only .243 or .270 rifles are allowed. I have no idea why.
Anyway, I just bought a Savage Axis rifle two weeks ago in .223 and my kids can shoot 2 inch groups at 75 yards with it and a simple Simmons 8 point 3x9-40 scope.

My requests for my daughter to use her grandfathers 30-30 were denied. We have a British .303 my dad used to kill multiple deer, javelinas, and hogs with back in the day. I felt that she cannot handle the .303. She is 15 and is only 4'11 and weighs about 110 pounds.

Well, I rushed out to Academy and bought a CVA Hunter in .243 and found two boxes of Winchester 100 grain Powerpoints and one box of Remington Core-locts. I could not really afford another rifle so soon, but wanted to get one to start her off using it.
Anyone have one of these, and if so, what experience with them. I like it in the finish is pretty good. It looks well made.

That's a dumb rule. And I can figure out a reason why he would make it. I can see if saying nothing smaller than a .243, but to only allow you 2 caliber choice is asinine. Maybe somebody else can clear that up, but I can't see a reason.

Don't know about the CVA but did have a H&R breakover 243....were disappointed in it.
Seems like a foolish rule the rancher has.

I had the 243 CVA for several years and took several game animals with it. It's slightly heavy for what it is but it's a well made rifle that shoots well. I always used Federal 100 grain and it would hold right at 1 MOA at 100yards.

I have its older cousin the Stalker Elite and its a fantastic rifle.
The Hunter is more of a traditional buttstock where-as the Stalker has a heavy thumb cut sniper style stock.
You will be surprised with its accuracy if it has the same Bergara barrel mine has.

I have a stalker elite as well and never have consistent grouping. Took it out put about 40 rounds through it and never touched it again.

I had a CVA Stalker in .30-06 and loved it. It's a simple gun, so great for a beginner hunter, and pretty accurate. It's been a while since I traded it away, so I don't remember the grouping, but if I remember correctly, I could keep 4 shots in about a 1-1/2" circle. I would buy another one if a good deal came along.
