My son and I are getting on our first deer lease in east texas. I think theres going to be some mud. Would you recommend a 4 wheeler or a side by side? Why?

Side by side for me. More room, comfort, hauling capacity and just a smoother ride at the end of the day.

No doubt about the comfort and carrying capacity of the side by side but the 4 wheeler "atv" can be taken in many places a utv will not go because of size and the cage covering most of them. Course there are a few hunters around that have one of each just in case.

For 2 of you, a side-by-side no question. I went from an ATV to a UTV and the only regret I had was not buying the UTV in the first place.

You got it right on the mud too. Wouldn't hurt to have a power winch.

I love my ranger crew and the kids love it. We all can ride together safely. I have a bed to haul all my corn to fill feeders. And when it is not full of corn, I get firewood and store my cooler. The only way you can comfortably do that on an atv is if you have a trailer as well.

I'll stick with my 4WD Grizzly. Most side by sides are so big I would rather have a Jeep.

Side by Sides much more comfortable IMO. But there are definitely places the 4 wheeler can go that most side by sides cant.

I had a atv for several years but sold it and bought a Honda Big red sxs and I love it. I am planning on selling the Big Red and getting the new Honda Frontier simply because where I hunt very few trails and lots of black locust thorns. If the Big Red has a draw back it is the size but most of the time even that is a positive, hauling people, corn, or firewood.

East Texas and mud equal a 4 wheeler with tall tires. I have driven my Ranger in that mud and it is a major pain in the A$$.

Personally I'd rather have a side by side.

UTV with 4 wheel drive, front windshield. Bed in back to carry gear, corn etc.. Keeps the wind off of you, it is safer and there are not many places in Texas where you need a standard ATV. Having said that, I have an ATV! Just looking for a UTV.

How old is your son? When I bought my Kubota 900, my kids were 7 and 9 and I didn't feel comfortable with them driving ATV's (I know a couple of people whose kids ended up in the hospital with serious injuries after flipping them). So for me, it was a choice between a UTV and a used 4 wheel drive vehicle. I went with a UTV so my kids could drive it.
Thanks, Rich

Given the prices of UTVs, why wouldn't you just buy a jeep or 4wd truck?

Definitely get a side by side, more places you can go on one and they even make full enclosures for most of them if you live in a colder part of the country. www.sbsparts.com

I've got both. This morning I wanted to go see where the dozer operator had cleaned a fence line for me. It's back in what I call the big tangle. For years, when fixing fence along there, I've had to cut my way in with a chainsaw just to get to the fence. I was amazed that the dozer guy could take that dozer where he did, but the fence line is accessible now. I considered taking the side by side, but went with the 4wheeler (Yamaha Big Bear in 4wd) to cruise that fence. It was a scary ride, being a mix of up, down, and sideways. I'm glad I took the Yamaha.

One of each, they both are handy in different applications especially in east texas when you are working on projects in the woods

We trail ride all the time and I have a teryx and I go every where the 4 wheelers do. The only reason I'm selling mine is to get a rzr cause we don't have a deer lease anymore so I want a strictly toy. Side x sides can go just about every where a 4 wheeler can. Look at the width of a 4 wheeler you like and look at the width of a side x side you like. I owned 4 wheelers the last 9 yrs and owned 6 different ones and I wouldn't trade my side x side for all of em.
