Just leased a small place in Jacksboro. Thae place is only 100 acres but SUPER SUPER thick. Wanting to put in 3 small food plots in the only not so thick spots. The place is kinda sandy, was wondering what would grow good in sandy soil whith our wonderful Texas no rain?

Is there any livestock on the place? How large are the areas? How deer will have access to these plots? Spring or fall plots?

No cattle ever to my knowledge game trails everywhere thru the place super thick with several couple acre clearing just really think those spots should be plots and need to know what grows best out there

Contact your local TPWD biologist and ask him/ her what most hunters in the area have found to grow best.

Get with your county extension agent and get his feedback or call the guys at Turner Seed in Breckenridge. A lot will depend on how many deer will have access to these plots. A good plot can support 3-5 deer per acre. So if you have 6 acres it could support 20 deer or so if you get average rains. Small grains in the fall and winter are always good choices and legume (peas, beans, clovers, alfalfa, etc) in the spring are good also.
