They're putting up a high fence directly across the road from my front gate. I've watched the feeder there in front of the house and the other morning there were 32 deer out there and 90% came over from that place. How can I keep the suckers on my side and keep them out of the "cage". We've got so much natural feed for them right now (acorns, greens, and such) that corn just can't hold them. Any help is appreciated.

If it were me i would put more feeders on my place up towards the gate and set them about 3 minutes later than theirs. I would collect a bunch of cigarete butts and that stuff they put out on crops to deter deer from getting into the crops, i would get that stuff and put it all around their place after the deer were on my place. That is what i'd do.

You have a right to be worried, and I feel your pain. I used to have a place that I called the meat market. I took it for granted until one year they high fenced the place across the road. My meat market turned into a meatless market and a waste of time. Deer on my side didn't find my area attractive anymore even with my feeders going. There was still deer there but the times I didn't see deer outnumbered the days I did.

My main concern is you know dang well they are doing the same thing on their side trying to get everything they can over there. But, we've gotten so much rain that everythings green and grown up down there that they don't want corn, don't need protein, and could care less about molasses and such.

My theory is if I can just hold on too the good ones i've got I won't need to hifence my place. My neighbors don't hunt and they feed the deer like crazy so if we can just hold on to the biggin's we got we'll be able to control and manage ours. I'm just worried about holding on to them.

Put out plenty of water and feed. If they are content with what they have they may stick around. Look for them to wait until most of the vegetation dies off and they will feed like crazy and close off the fence when they think it's time. Not much else you can do.

Unfortunately, hope is about all you can do...I mean you can definately try attracting and holding them with food, water and the like. What gets me is that if these people would do their homework and maybe talk to a biologist, they'd be informed that once they high fence an entire place and don't leave crossovers and such, that their deer herd will begin to behave as penned animals. By this I mean that their breeding slows down, conception is affected and you get too much inbreeding. You must give the herd the ability to get out and mingle with the surrounding deer to keep the genetics at a natural level. I feel for you Cody and I think that high fencing should be illegal unless it's used to keep deer off or out of crops. However, I have personally seen big bucks jumping right over 8-10 game fences.

well try this. Go to your local barber and ask him to save all the cut hair. Then swipe your ol' ladies nylons, add one rock, a bunch of hair and any other nasty thing you can think of. Then one night you and your buddies take a hike and bomb these things all over the property. The nylons act as camo so no-one will see them.

If the place isn't fenced yet and the wind was right a good out of control "controlled burn" may work wonders. Not that I would suggest doing anything illeagle.
I have a friend who owned land right next door to the Celebrity ranch in north Erath county. He told me that after they built the high fence he never saw any deer. His place is maybe 360 acres. The following year I was at the Hunters Extravaganza. I was listening to the son of the guy who owns the Celebrity Ranch talking to another guy. He said they put in food plots in the middle of the ranch and attracted all the deer in the area and then put up the fence. I spoke up and told him I thought it was chicken sh*t and that a friend of mine was his neighbor. He asked who my friend was. I told him my friends name. The guy shut up, turned around and walked off.
I have some other friends that live across the road still and they are starting to see more deer again. It has taken ten years for the deer "outside" the fence to start getting a population going again.
I dont like high game fences either. But....I did hunt inside one before at the Chaparrel WMA two years ago. I saw first hand what a good managment program can do there. They dont do any supplemental feeding of protien but the deer are awesome there.

We had a deer lease in Duval ( Freer )last year that was 1100 acres it had hight fence on 3 sides. The way the lease set there were 5 sides so 2 were still open .We seen 5 deer all year long !!! We dont hunt there any more !!
What I would do if I was you .Put as many feeders as you can on your place to try to hold all the deer. I think alot of high fence places run deer by plane on to there place before the put the fence up .Did you know that once the fence is up and they have a servey done the TP&W will sell the does cheep.

What are you talking about TPW selling the does? Only if you have MLD, or scientific breeding permit, can you have deer pens and trap, tag, dart and trasnport deer. That is my understanding.

As far as running deer onto other ranches before the fence goes up, I am sure it does happen, but that is not the practice. They guy flying the helicopter has to be licensed for what he is doing and you cannot stay on a deer very long as you would be "harrassing" the animal". You can fly and survey the land for a deer count.

A guy across the road from us in S. Texas put up a fence and a few months later did a helicopter survey....they say one doe. That makes his management pretty darn easy, but his hunting pretty poor.

I am of the opinion, that if a land owner wants to high fence his property, then that is their right. But deer are the property of the state of Texas. Once a high fence is completed, then the TPW should survey the enclosed deer herd and bill the land owner for confiscation of state property. Michigan does this.

That's a good idea. They are taking away from what a licensed hunter had a possibly right to.

Hey Cody, you could set up some propane guns on that end of your pasture to go off every so often at the time you think they may close off the fence, but do it on your side and it may detour some of them and it would be legal as long as there are no neihbors close that would complain of the noise. Might plant a crop so you could argue that you are protecting an investment. Just a thought. Might try food plots, deer love soy beans, and keep your small sapling trees cut down to deer height and your shrubs and vines cut back, creates new growth and they love it, will walk past corn and protein to eat natural forbes ecpecially new growth.

??

When shooting film on them, the only ones from the helicopter survey are just big bucks.

For breeding, most will have does and bucks and sell either sex.

For a place that is next to one where a fence will go up, heck they can string one side of a fence in a couple of days, so when it is going up, you are pretty much at the mercy of what is on your property when the fence is complete.

Personally, I do not agree with it, but I have hunted a few fenced places, not fenced on each side, but fenced enough. I see a problem with the prices people charge to hunt under fence when the state regulates the deer anyway and they belong to the state, but once the fence goes up, then sure they belong to the state, but they cannot leave the ranch in any other way then the back of a pickup or in an ice chest. Then they can get around it by scientific deer breeding or MLD, or whatever it takes.

I could argue both sides of this for days.

My only thought is to start feeding near your property line, but also a little deeper into the place to move deer back into the property. Then I would tell you until the fence goes up, I would be real selective on what I shoot on your place,,,,,try not to tag out, maybe shoot one doe and one buck, try to keep what you think is your deer herd in check.

we have 1800 acres near meridian and the border ranch decided to high fence it...their money and we are high fenced on 3 sides...whata deal...sure you will lose some deer but they are fencing out genetics as well...plus I dont have to feed their deer anymore...some places,NOT ALL,will run deer with helicopters and pull the fence up,if you are worried about this then find out when they plan to pull the fence up...and be there that day with a video camera...its been done before...I didn`t like it when it started but did not see a great decline in our population...good luck...
