On the way up to Ruidoso I stopped off in Carlsbad at the Living Desert Zoo and Museum. Nice place to kill an hour and stretch your legs. Coachwhip Snake  Banded Rattlesnake  Prairie Dawg  Mountain Pooty-tat  The next day I headed over to the area around Capitan and the Capitan Mountains. Came upon a large herd of pronghorns, many of which were wearing radio transmitter collars. Bet it has something to do with the Roswell aliens. Northern Shoveler  Prairie Goats   Sacramento Mountains and Sierra Blanca from the Capitan Mountains  The 2nd day I drove down through the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation Barns

This is Stella, the Stellar Blue Jay. When very young, a woodpecker attacked her and broke her wing. My brother watched it happen. He collected Stella and fed her while she healed. Now she hangs around the cabin and squawks at you until you feed her peanuts.   You can see her messed up wing here.

The 3rd day I went hiking around in the Rio Bonita Headwaters Preserve. I was the only one there, which made it pretty nice. I had heard that there are some petroglyphs in the park but I never found any. It was plenty danged cold though...18 degrees. This from the highway above the park, which is down in the canyon below. That's the Jicarilla Range in the background.  Looking back west to Sierra Blanca  Sierra Blanca  Not long into my hike I stumbled onto this old adobe ruin. I later discovered that this used to be a brewery. I knew there was a reason I liked this spot.     The Rio Bonita  Rio Bonita Valley with Sierra Blanca in the background

I've got some more to post. Our desert 4 wheeling adventure through Rattlesnake Canyon got a bit interesting. I'll try to post later today. I'm headed back home tomorrow so I may not post again until the following day.

When I was in my late teens, we used to hunt Mule Deer in El Capitan. Loved that place, awesome pictures!
