Hello all, my father inlaw gave me this rifel today, hes had it for several years in the back of the closit. He said that he has never fired it and feels it should fire with no trouble at all, it apears to be in good overall shape. I have found that its a 6.5x55 caliber. Its missing the rear iron site does anyone know where I might can find one? Its stamped with carl gustafs stads gevarsfaktor i. 1920 It does have the brass ring thats been stamed but I dont know how to read it. Any info on parts would be very apreciated, thank you.

Your not missing the original rear sight. It had a diopter sight add on as a target rifle. These were commonly used for target competition shooting in sweden.

Lots of info online about reading the medallion on the stock. It's split up into pie pieces and the numbers in each "slice" will dictate different characteristics about the rifle. I could explain but it will be easier for you to desipher it by doing the web search... That appears to be a nice rifle. Enjoy.

It appears, to me, that you need a Type 2 sight. However, I could be and frequently am, wrong.

Yep, your missing the ladder sight. Your first pictures only showed the rear of the action where a diopter sight had been. The last owner in Sweden probably removed the rear sight because it was not needed.
Looks like you still have the sight spring. You need the ladder assembly and the pin. Look up Liberty Tree Collectors, Samco Global, and Sarco for the parts. Ebay may be your best friend though. There is a complete ladder assembly on there right now. There were a few different military approved Target sights that could have been on your rifle where the holes are drilled. Sarco has a Soderin target sight listed for a fair price. And again watching ebay is your best friend if you want to replace the Diopter also or instead of the ladder. All the diopter sights are going to be over $100. But Pramm, Soderin, Elite, each will have a slightly different two hole pattern, so it may be difficult to figure out which one fits your hole pattern. After you replace the ladder sight you may find your front sight too low for practical distances. Remember these are from an era when men fired very long distances from trenches. Those same online companies listed above have taller sights available too so you can replace the front sight for a taller one to bring the sight range into the 100 yard +- ranges if needed.
Great rifle to have and shoot. Great caliber to shoot and my favorite. I own a few swedish mausers that include standard Model 96 rifles like yours, 1898 dated ones, CG63 Target, M41B Sniper, and my main hunting rifles are in 6.5x55. Careful. If you tinker with that rifle much, you will get hooked too.

There is a place in Irving that has massive amounts of old military parts. I believe the name is Lee's Gun Parts.

I got the time to go to lees gun parts and he hooked me up, I got the sights with the pin for 10.00, I had really exspected to pay much more and was really shocked at the 10.00 price. Ive got it installed and the gun cleaned and oiled and ready to go to the range, hope to find some ammo soon.

6.5x55mm is definitely an underrated cartridge.
