Guys, how come we do not see the quality of deer that we have in Texas come out of the Sooner state? They have some great areas, I just never hear about in 160"+ deer coming out of the state.
What is it?

You have to be kidding. If I were a serious trophy hunter and wanted to do it within my familys budget, since I can't afford to buy one in Texas, I would hunt for one in Oklahoma. Deer up there too are of a different subspecies than in Texas. They have big body weights. My biggest buck taken in SE OK weighed 156 field dressed and was the smallest one taken to the check station on opening day of that Blackpowder season. Many in the check station book before mine were over 200 pounds.

Your missing the point, I know they have bigger deer as far as body weight, I am talking horn size. They just don't seem to have the population of big grossing bucks that they do here in Texas. You have showed 2 impressive bucks, I would like to see more come out of the Sooner state.

I got the point. I just added a bit of trivia in my response with the body weight.
I just presented four from 191" to 248" B&C. Three of which taken last season in Oklahoma. So now you can never say "never".

I am hunting public land this coming up season as well in Leflore County in OK. I am going to try and set up some cams early in the season and try and get a bruiser, I plan on bow hunting every weekend.

Locals will steel your cams and anything else you leave out there. I had to leave Hugo one time on short notice for a day and was unable to retrieve my ladder stand that I had hunted the evening before. It was gone a day later when I returned. Oh and it was locked to the tree with a cable. Corps of Engineers guys hunting nearby also lost two or three stands that year. I personally would never leave a game cam in the woods in that area of Oklahoma unless they were very cheap ones. They call it the Frontier State for a reason.

Damn, thanks again.
I was going to leave my lone wolf stand in the tree, now I am re-thinking that. I would hate to have that stolen.

also about your cams gettin stolen. i know some people that have gotten some stolen over there to! they use climbing stands when they hunt hugo so they dont have to leave them up and take a chance at getting them stolen.

It's hard to kill good bucks every year here in Oklahoma because your damn neighbors shoot the 1.5-3.5 year olds whenever they catch a glimpse of them. Oh and lets not forget about the spot lighters and poachers in the southern oklahoma area, it's gotten really bad. But I do know of 8 bucks over 150 that were taken in the last 2 weeks here in S.Oklahoma

Spank- Oklahoma has some of the best public land around. Also look north east or north west. I'm a big fan of Osage/Pawnee counties along the river, but don't count out the western part of the state. Big deer west of Elk City all the way to the panhandle. Good luck.

Thats what I noticed, they have a ton of public land.
The reason I ask, is because my fiance is a freshman at TU Law here in Tulsa and I would like to find some public land pretty close.

The largest white tail I have ever laid eyes on was near Harmon,Oklahoma south of Woodward. We were quail hunting and there I stood with a 12 ga. with # 8 shot as he stood for about two minutes about 100 yards. I swear he would go 190 or better,a monster of a deer.Went back and hunted him but no luck, saw one that would go 130 or so.Place was small,150 acres or so,have dreamed about that deer for years. There or some great deer in western Oklahoma

Another possible reason is that their rifle season is only 16 days long. We have a place in south OK and I have seen a lot of healthy deer up there.
Usually what my deal is, if I am able to hunt you are limited to 3 weekends with a rifle. With a family that is involved with sports and such (like mine) it is more than likely I only get to go 2 out of 3 weekends. So my time to actually hunt them is pretty limited.
