Just got on a lease a little south of Moran off 6 near the Callahan Co. line. Can anyone give me some feedback on this area and what I should expect?

Hogs, Coyotes, Deer
I don't know your standards but I would set my goals for 125" and above.

I have hunted about 3 miles south of Moran for 12 years (I can see the Moran water tower from my blind). Not a huge number of deer on our place (about 450 acres), but usually see a fair number of deer. Hogs are EVERYWHERE! Not many turkey on our lease at this time, but there are times when they seem to come in droves. I shot a good buck a few years ago and let one walk that was REALLY good, I just could not get a good look at him. Saw him on the camera. Still kicking myself. Hope this helps.

North of Moran west of 6. Few hogs lots of turkey, 120+ deer and coyotes.

Good looking country over there, ya'll hear anything about a meth problem in the area?

Pretty bad in that area overall. Or so I hear. Several friends live in or near the area and say it is pretty rampant.

I own a small place about 7 miles south of Moran. I haven't seen any of the meth heads but I've heard it's there. The deer are in the 125's on a good day. not many turkey and LOTS of coyotes.

It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance.

I heard the deer were a lot bigger until they started inhaling all that meth smoke but they also appear to be a lot happier these days.

Lots of hogs and yotes. If your place has Battle Creek running through it, I guarantee that you will have hogs. Turkey hatch has been poor the last couple of years because of the dry conditions but the population is turning around. Quail are past history in most areas. The area that you are describing was severely impacted by the drought. There was a little pocket that just seemed to miss even the small rains. We lost most of our fawn crop that year which has us in a rebuilding stage. Sounds like you are not very far from me. I am a few miles south of Moran on the next county line.

Can't speak for the meth labs, but hunted about 5 miles SE of Moran just inside the Shackleford county line last couple of years. Headed back west this year. Good amount of deer, lots of turkey and some hogs. I would expect 125 + mature bucks. Lots of pressure and as usual mature bucks seemed nocturnal except for rut. Best advice I can give is throw a lot of feed. Overall not a bad area just lots of pressure being that close to DFW.

Not sure where all the info about meth labs is coming from? How about a few specifics?

It may stem from either 60 Minutes or 20/20, when several years ago they crowned Eastland County the meth capital of the country. I guess, in some minds, you are close enough to be included. I was talking to a DPS officer at the pizza joint in Clyde a few months ago, and he said that even though there is still a big problem with meth in that area, they believe the majority of the manufacturing has been moved further west to accommodate the oilfield boom around Snyder and Midland. With the development of easier and quicker methods of manufacturing it, the meth heads don't need all the equipment and chemicals they needed before, now all they need is a handful of ephedrine pills, some batteries, and a few other things, and they are in business. So, what used to take a house or large garage to do, can now be done on a kitchen table.

Sorry I broached the subject, now let's steer the thread back to the hunting in the area as any information in that would be greatly appreciated. Also any info on nearby feed stores, processors, eats, etc... Thanks

Places to eat: Fort Griffin in Albany, Linda's in Cisco serves a great breakfast.
Processors: Deep Creek in Moran, Rust Deer plant between Cisco and Eastland.
Feed store in Cisco, a little pricey, but works in a pinch.

There is a little place in "downtown" Moran that is basically a hole in the wall, but makes the best pizza I've had in many, many years. They make other foods as well, but we had the pizza and I am waiting for a reason/excuse to go back to Moran just so I can go get me another of their pizzas.

Albany has the Beehive which is one of the best steakhouses in he state. They also have a good Mexican cafe name Los Cazadores. There are 4 places to get corn in town, EZ Feed, Higginbothams, Albany Hardware, and Brookshires. Plus it's a great little town to bring the wife to for a weekend.
Plenty of deer, hogs and turkey in Moran area. This past year one of the biggest deer killed in the county came from the Moran area.

Moran has a liquor store and a café. I grab my corn in Cisco or Eastland on the way in. I usually go to Albany just to kill time in the middle of the day.

We are on Pecan creek at jacks branch which is east of Moran. We are covered with hog's and yots. The deer are scares after opening day, but that is due to hunting pressure on you place.

Have lived in Moran area for 7 decades and never heard of Pecan Creek or Jack's Branch? You must be out toward Breckenridge?
