Looks nice but if I had one of my grandpaws guns I don't think I could refinish it.

I sent my grandma a email with telling her step by step the process I did to refinish it ... She called crying happy with joy that I had taken the time to clean it up and refinish it ....

I've refinished both guns I got from my great grandfather. It's the rifle I'm attached to, not the wood. I wanted them to be beautiful so I could pass down heirlooms to my kids. Now I have added to the legacy of that firearm. 100 years from now, when my great great grandson gets my savage 99 the story will be "this gun was made way back in 1958. It was passed down from your great great great great grandfather and has been passed down to a son or daughter in every generation. Your great great grandfather loves this rifle so much, that he spent days sanding and buffing and reconditioning and staining and rubbing the stock with oil so that it would stay in wonderful shape, and last for generations.
I hope that a couple generations from now, when the wood is old, and dry, and scuffed that one of my descendants still loves the gun so much that they put hard work Into making it beautiful again.
The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference. -George Washington

I sent my grandma a email with telling her step by step the process I did to refinish it I've got a couple I need to redo as well. Mind posting up that process? Finished product looks great!

After that I did a process to the wood to pull the dents out . U cannot pull scratches out because those tear the fibers in the wood and damage them . The dents just smash in the fibers but they are still present . So what did I do ? I used a iron, yes a cloths iron ... I put a damp cloth over the wood and water in the iron and the steam and heat causes the wood to rise . It was pretty amazing how well this process worked . Next was sanding starting off with a low grit paper taking all of the old stain off of the gun and making sure not to mess up the checking on the wood . After getting all the old stain off with the low grit it was time to step it up to a higher grit and smooth the wood out . Before I did this I did another process to raise the grain and get and extra fibers that may be laying down . I wet the wood with a damp cloth and used a hair dryer to dry it . Then was off to a higher grit . Same process again moving to the final 220 grit to finish the sanding process .
Then for the staining . Used American walnut and used a rag to wipe on and another clean rag to wipe down after applying the stain . I did this process twice to get the color I wanted then cleared it. Between the two coated of clear I sanded with 220 grit to get surface even .
For sanding I started with 100 grit then 150 then 220 to finish

Next time, give a tea kettle a try. Easy to get the steam exactly where you need it.

My grandpa refinished all his guns. When the finish got ratty, he stripped it and put more on. When he passed, I refinished his old 22 and gave it to my brother. I thoroughly enjoyed the process.

Thanks guys I really enjoyed this project and it really meant something to me more than just slapping some stain on a worn gun .... It really made my grandmother happy as well to see I cared about the gun and how much I like it

Very Nice Work. And Your Grandpa will live on, every time you and your family shoulder the weapon and remember him.
