I'm planning an Alaska trip with my wife and another couple in August. Would it be realistic to peel off for two days and expect a decent chance to shoot a caribou? I know very little about how it works. Do outfitters offer that short of a hunt? What is the shortest hunt I can expect to book? I realize as time decreases so does success.

I would suggest a week, minimum, if you are anywhere picky at all. That said, I shot a near-record book B&C caribou on the third day of my hunt on the Stoney River.

Contrast that good luck with the fact that I shot my first brown bear only after 32 days of hunting on 3 different trips.

And contrast that brown bear hunt with my 26 9/16 B&C grizzly that I shot on the first day on the Seward Peninsula.

I think you should take your time and experience the real Alaska. It shouldn't be rushed.

when I go to Alaska I'm going for a min. of 14 days

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

To sum it up, 2 days total = No.

If you fly in, you can't hunt the day you fly. Which means you would have to kill one the next morning before you fly back in the afternoon. Plus the logistics of getting to your flyout location.

If you hunt the Dalton hiway, you could drive up but that still burns at least a day driving each way - assuming that you find a rental that will allow it.

The only possible way is a few drawing permits, which I am sure you do not possess since you are asking this question.

Not to discourage you, but my advice is go halibut fishing and plan a seperate hunting trip with a minimum of 1 week in state.

After catching some small halibut off Malibu from a day tripper party boat, and having one cooked up for our gang who was stuck in a 2 week IT Softeware Seminar up near LAX in '98...if I had enough Airline miles anymore I'd stand in line ..AGAIN ...to go catch the much larger Alaskan halibut any day I could. Best piece of fresh 4 hour old fish I ever ate. One half of a tad larger than barely legal Halibut fed our 6 guys and fresh fried leftovers for all the waiters and cooks at the diner on the ?Santa Monica boat basin.

Like I said, I know very little about this. Thanks for the solid advice. After coming down from my initial over-excitement I realize I was trying to do too much. As suggested, we are looking for a quality Halibut fishing trip while we are there. We are also open to any other recommendations to make our trip most enjoyable.

Take a pie pan so you can brag about your gold dust days. Never know, you might find enough to pay for your trip.
