Hey Guys
I'm going to a seldom hunted 1000 acre ranch near Brenham Tx - which has a bunch of hogs around
Taking some first time hog hunters to try and get a pig....
I was thinking about making a few small piles of corn in the afternoon and pouring some of the sweet sticky hog bait round and then stake them out around dark ....think it will work?
I have very little prep time for the hunt - but will be hunting Sat night, all day Sunday and Monday morning
not sure how fast hogs will find a baited spot - any better plans are welcomed ...
Thanks Chris

It can take time for an critter to frequent a spot....and near impossible on a short notice. Best thing I can say is walk it slowly looking for sign and hope to cross paths with the pigs. If you find a super highway then set up watching it. Other than that get permission to put up a feeder. You will have them hitting it regularly in a couple of weeks.

On short notice like that, you probably have the right idea. If you could scout a little and find trails, etc. and put out a corn line in a straight line from your shooting spot. A pile will go fast as all they have to do is stand there and eat it whereas a corn line will spread it out a little and make them work for it. A feral crack pipe will keep them in place for quite a while.
About the only way to get them there at a set time is with a timed feeder but it will take at least 7 to 10 days for them to start hitting it on time - and pigs usually don't do anything on your schedule, heck I don't think they know what a schedule is...they just look for food, water and sex!

It can be done Mix lots of strawberry koolaid with corn and cheap beer let it marinate and get stinky a week before you hunt, A day before you hunt put out the corn mix and also Put out some sow in heat urine all over the place and pour boar urine on a rag and do a drag line back to your blind to cover your scent , in your blind spray down with hog urine as a cover scent if your hunting close.
Another crazy tactic that I' have used is I spray a whole can glade berry scented air fresher at the corn site and that smell will travel very far on a windy day and bring them hogs in quick.

Borrowing from Car Talk, go to your local feed or sporting goods store and look for attractants with the word "miracle" in the name.
Aside from free hunting, the second most common thing people seem to want from hog hunting is instant attractant. If such things worked so darned well, we would all use them and all have hogs all the time.
Put out some corn, whatever special attractant you want, and wear your lucky underwear.

We just corn the roads that we can see down good, a bag of corn will go a long ways if you just trickle feed the road from a bag. We just put a guy on the tailgate with several bags of corn. We sit and watch the roads for an evening hunt (usually setting behind a patch of bushes while wearing camos) and then drive the roads ever hour or so after that. The truck headlight do pretty good but a spot light helps, the spots mounted on the Ranger are the best. We always seem to find hogs by doing this as we cover such a large area. We have done this on ranches that are not hunted often and it is amazing how fast they can find corn when you spread it all over the place like that.

Our lease it takes 2 days or more to hit a bait. We put Pig Out in a hole next to the feeder so the camera could see. The pigs eat there all of the time and should have found it right away, it still took 2 days before they ate it. It was steady dining after that.

You're just going to have to find a way to hunt where the pigs are. I know some landowners South of Brenham and they have started to see a lot more sign since about 2008, but they don't see much of anything during the day. I would bring something that you can spotlight with.

soured up corn. We soaked it in wheat beer and then threw in something called "Maggi" sauce that you can find in the international section of HEB. Its like Soy Sauce but with more herbs. That drives the pigs wild where I hunted.
