So, here is a inquisitive question for you to chime in on. Since the fencing industry has done so well selling/installing 6'+ fence clear across the state 10 times over... and then some! Most of this is a woven wire mesh with 1 or 2 barbed wires over the top, clearing about 5-6 feet in height. Which of the exotics & natives can jump this, and what stays contained to one side? I know whitetails & axis are jumpers, but what about oryks and blackbuck? I know pigs don't fly very good, so they bust through. Last week one night I was returning from the hog blind and alongside the road a small whitetail buck had jumped the top 2 wires and 1 leg had slipped between and was "snared" or twisted between the wires. We was able to untwist him & out and we all escaped with only minimal scratches. But one has to wonder how many animals don't get untangled only to die a slow, painfull death.

I have a little over 6' fence around my place. In 20 or more years have not found one hung in it. Have WT, Aoudad and Axis jump in and out of it. I had a WT doe that had jumped in and had a fawn. She would jump in and nurse the fawn and then jump back out. After it was weaned the fawn stayed and the doe never came back.

Sounds like a smart doe. Sometimes I wish you could raise kids that way. Lol

We either put 48" in net and lay the barb on top of it or put 39" net with a barb on it and raise the top barb 10" or so. It doesn't stop all hang ups but gives them a fighting chance.

I've seen em hung up in some very low fences. Who knows? Maybe they underestimate how high it is or maybe something was chasing them and they jumped too far back to clear it.

The best thing to use may be woven wire mesh as stated in the previous post. This woven mesh will not allow a tail, ear, hoof, or anything else to get stuck because the opening are too small.

Try something like a 10 x 10 stainless steel wire cloth - can be found here:

www.bwire.com

Bellevile Wire Cloth - they told me the stainless steel will never rust and will not fall apart over time...

Definitely something to look into and get more information about.

Most fences are 52" more or less. With netwire on the bottom it has always been an issue for deer in poor body condition jumping the fences and getting hung on the top strands of barbwire or netwire. It is much worse on younger deer since they do not have the experience in jumping fences. Deer do not like to jump and can get lazy at times. I found a dead doe hung in in the top of the 48"-12" spacing net wire fence on my place this fall. I was gone to Kansas for 8 days and when I got back found only a leg left thanks to coyotes and vultures.

I have noticed that deer will just barely "clear" a fence, no matter how high it is. At our place, I have seen more hung up in the 48" fence than in the 60" fence. There was a feed pen made of cattle panel that caught 3 different deer legs in one year, but have never seen another in 20 years confused2

We had two hung in 48" cattle panels last year within 6 months of building new feeder pens. We cut them back to 40" and haven't had any since.

We were thinking about going down to 36" but I'm wondering if it will still keep the goats out.... Any input on that?

If ducks had horns I'd probably be a duck hunter.
I am a horrible deer hunter. Probably the worst. Ever.

I have come up on a disappointing seen or two myself. Think it is when there is the two top bobwire strands seperated just right, that a back hoove lands between them as they are going over, innertwines around it and snars 'em up. Real shame.

Junior> Yes, that was what happened to this buck I released. The wires were so tight, it was pretty tough getting them to spring apart & release the deer. When the deer sprung loose, then my thumb was caught and with a jackknife we released my thumb. Things were pretty gory there for a minute and could've gone south very quickly, but just a few scratches wasn't too bad.

Deer seem to jump only the bare minimum. I've seen them caught in a 4' fence and a 6' fence. I had a bow stand near a fence once and I always knew when the deer were coming because I would hear them hitting the top of the fence when they came over.
