Hi just wanted to see if there was other trappers on here? I grow up running a trap line with my dad. Now I am teaching my boys how trap. My 8 yr old loves coon trapping with dog proof traps. I trap a lot of cats coyotes cats coons and beaver. I let my 11 yr old last yr kill his first beaver. You would have thought he had killed a monster buck. That's all he talked about. And went he shot his first coyote and cat the boys are hooked. They use a cricket 22 with a red dot on it. On cat and coyotes I use mb 650 traps and on fox I use Bridger #2 4 coil because I catch coyotes in some of the same sets I snare the beaver. I also use duke #3 offset 4 coil. I have a lot of fun teaching them. And there started skinning the coons a little. If anybody else traps let me know Ty.

Hey Ty, I hit em pretty hard this year when I could but had to shut down early. Mainly coon my self I run all z traps for coon and love the 650s for coyote and cat. I also have a few sets of mercers cam trip cages for cats but I just got them this year and was only able to get em out once. How was your season so far

I make every set for bobcat. I use Vic 1.75s. I catch crows, rabbits, feral cats, stray dogs, possum ... oh yeah coon, bobcat and grey fox. I don't set for coyote as I don't have alot of livestock around my place. I used to hear 'em, but the only evidence I''ve had was possibly a fox that was dead from one chomp. The hide was fine.

We stare fence line holes and DP traps on feeders. Simple yet effective around our place. I would like to get better at targeting coyotes.

I snare high fences and trap cats, coyotes, foxes and coons. I like the mb 650 and the bridger #4 for bobcats and coyote. I like the z traps. It's a coon catching machine...

I gave trapping a shot this year, gunning mainly for coyotes and bobcats. So far, 2 dogs, 4 cats with 4 traps. I bought two Duke #3's that I tinkered with. I base plated, center swiveled, laminated and night latched them on my own. That was a lot of fun, just modifying them. I also got two of the MB-550's because of their reputation. They were ready to go after dying & waxing. 2 cats and 1 dog using each brand of trap. 2 cats caught with feather flagging at dirt holes, the other 2 were simple dirt holes on a well established merging of 3 trails. Both dogs were at fence intersections with dirt holes. It's been much more fun than I even imagined, and I look forward to learning all I can to make next season as memorable. I'd really like to get into snaring, but I know absolutely nothing about it. If anyone is interested in a basic beginners class, feel free to PM me. What's the draw and benefit to using the MB 650's over the 550's for dogs and cats? Great thread, I hope more people pitch in to offer success stories and advice!
Mike

650 just a size bigger than the 550. All around stronger trap, wider jaw spread. The 550 works just fine in my opinion but I like big traps

Just ordered a 1/2 dozen DP Coon traps and plan on getting after them at my place ASAP!
Question: I want to try yotes and bob cats during the fawning period. The place I am going to trap is 30 Acs and there are domestic dogs in the area. If I go after yotes, am at risk of catching someones pet fido?

Domestic dogs will work a set just as a coyote or bobcat or sooner; more than likely catching a few if they frequent the area. Best advice is to notify your adjacent landowners and let them know you will be trapping targeting coyotes and bobcats, but the sets will catch dogs too and it would benefit them to keep them up. You would not be responsible if one got caught after notifying them that you are trapping.
One of my bests traps I have stuck with since I did coyote depredation work back in the early 80's is the #4 and #3 Newhouse which they had for us to use. Other than those, a Montgomery #3 or #4 Coilspring, tripled swiveled and either a two-prong drag or a stake, depending upon soil and brush conditiions.

I have run snares for coyotes and bobcats on netwire fences for years now and still have a few on my place. I have started to use the Duke Dog proof traps for the last 3-4 yrs now for coons. I have also started using Duke Coil Spring traps to catch coyotes and bobcats. I watched my grandfather trap coyotes when I was young back in the 60's. I still have a lot to learn about setting for coyotes and can say I have educated more than I have caught so far.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Thanks for the advise, I am going to stick with the DP traps for now. I have Trail Cams out and will monitor the Domestic Dog situation before I put out any yote/cats sets out. Will post of success/failure pics when I get going!
