unless i'm talked out of it, i'm going to be purchasing a new gun this week.. my christmas bonus arrived and i like to buy me 1 nice thing out of it from workin' my A off all year to earn it.. went to the local wal-mart and saw a mossberg 30-06.. $249.. plus a scope.. so i'm getting it around $300.. i read a lot about it and have read a lot of good stuff.. im going to academy tonight to see if there is anything i see there or has a better price.. any info to help pursuade me into another gun? i also saw a remi 770 at wal mart and it came with a nice scope for $315.. so that was an option too.. both are bolt action.. i have a bass pro close by, is there something there i should go check out?

thanks..

I could go on and on about my Savage package series Model 111, but you need to go check it out at the local Walmart.

Cost for mine was just under $400 out the door with 3x9x40 scope and all. Gun is a reliable tack driver and accurate w/i one inch @ 100 yards right out of the box.

Better gun than the Mossberg, my 2 cents...

no matter what don't get the 770. The mossberg or the Savage would be much better. They didn't have any of the cheap remington 700s without a scope there?

Savage rifles are shooters right out of the box. I'd go Savage.

If that's your price point, go with the Savage. That Remington 770 is one gritty action.

Savage is better than the remmy's or mossbergs or whatever in that price range...

My daughter shot her first deer this year with a Savage 243 youth model. Dead on straight out of the box...being a dad is awesome and so was her shot placement (12yoa).

I would throw the package scope in the trash and pick up at least a Nikon Prostaff.

like cbump say's trash the scope! and by some experiences we have had even those aluminum scope bases! we had several people having trouble with those package guns. after changing the aluminum bases to steel alot of there problems were gone! an most if not all package guns come with aluminum scope bases and rings!

I agree the package scopes are generally not real good, but they usually hold up for a season or two to allow time for funds to recover.

Not all package guns though, Savage offers packages with Leupold's....

My Savage 110 came with the Simmons 3x9x40 and it is just fine. Dead-nuts on right out of the box! I have absolute faith in that gun and sold my Remmy Model 7 in .308 as I liked it better.

Have you looked at the new rifle (new to my knowledge anyway) Marlin XL7 bolt action, saw one the other day when I went in to buy a new rifle and they looked nice for the $298 price tag.

I bought it out at BassPro in Grapevine about 5 years ago during one of their fall sales. It was $399 and I originally bought it for my wife, but I liked it so much that I use it now.
