If you move your eye closer to the scope do you get a full image? Try lifting or lowering your cheek weld and see if you get a full pic.

Jeff, If I move closer then yes, but each time I do that, the round hits somewhere new on the target even at 50 yards.

Looks to me like you could move that scope back a full 1" in those rings and probably even move the whole mount back a little ways as well if your problem has to do with having to creep forward on the stock to get your full circle.

It looks like you can flip the mount around to bring the scope back towards yourself. You just aren't close enough.

It looks like your scope is mounted too far back. Normally on an AR the rear of the scope will be just slightly in front of the charging handle.
Also, make sure the base is tightened down and the rings are tight around the scope. Lastly, the adjustment knobs should not be touching the front ring. You want those knobs centered between the two rings.

When I bought my AR, most folks I talked to recommended mounting the scope as Doc suggested.

It looks like your scope is mounted too far back. Normally on an AR the rear of the scope will be just slightly in front of the charging handle. That depends on the eye relief of the scope and what's comfortable for the shooter. If the scope has a short eye relief, then the scope is mounted too far forward.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Not sure why you say that because like I said in my original post I see at least a inch worth of rear space in just the rings alone.

JCB you are right. I had to go back and look. The mount is as far back as it will go. This has really got me flustered as I have never had this problem before. RR it is a Vortex Crossfire 4-12 X 40.

Don't do this. The base needs to be moved forward to give more eye relief.

What kind of groups are you getting?
What kind of mount is that?
What kind of ammo.
Could you zero with another setup?

move the mount back about one inch and tighten down. Then loosen the screws holding the scope rings, mount the rifle with your eyes closed and then open your eyes. You should be able to see a full picture even with the scope on its highest power. If not then adjust the scope forwards or backwards until you do.

Move your head forward or move your scope back, if that is what gives you a better sight picture. Make sure everything is tight.
While I agree with most of what dochorton said, there is not an absolute place that is the "right" place to mount your scope. That depends on a combination of the scope, how you sit behind the rifle, etc etc. It has to be adjusted for each shooter.

The scope you have has 3.9" of eye relief.
Have a buddy help you with this.
Close your eyes, and shoulder the rifle as you would and keep your eyes closed, do it a couple times until you feel it is in the right place. Then while you're holding the gun, have your buddy measure 3.9" from your eye towards the scope, and mount the scope ocular lens there.
Any questions?

You should be able to see a full picture even with the scope on its highest power. If not then adjust the scope forwards or backwards until you do. ^^This^^ Be sure to place masking tape on the scope tube once you fix eye relief. Put the tape parrallel to the rings, just touching the rings. Then be sure to level the scope to the rifle. One pretty good way is to just use feeler gauges. The method I prefer is to place a U.S. Optics level on the pic rail, support the rifle where it won't move. Make the scope look at a 1/2" rope with a weight (plumb bob). It can't help but be level. Level rifle, level the reticle to the plumb bob, tourqe the scews to 1/2 the prescribed torque setting recheck everything. If it's good, torque them down the rest of the way. Don't forget the low hold Locktite on the ring screws prior to installing them.

That depends on a combination of the scope, how you sit behind the rifle, etc etc. It has to be adjusted for each shooter. I thought most folks placed the scope like Doc said so they can access the charging handle, not necessarily because that is the best eye relief spot. I know on my Colt, I can pull the handle by grabbing just the left side, but it isn't nearly as easy as coming from the back and using two fingers on both sides. If a scope sits on top, doesn't that make using the charging handle tougher?
