This past deer season we had problems with a mans dog chasing deer on our property. The owner of the dog does not keep his dogs locked up and just lets them roam. More than three times this deer season different hunters on our land watched this dog chase deer while they were hunting which really ruined there hunts. We talked to the owner before deer season and he did nothing. What should we do?

We had the same problem this year, a house about half a mile through the woods had 3 dogs that roamed. One day my brother-in-law saw one chasing a buck on our land but didn't shoot at either for some reason. Later the same day his 2 year old daughter was outside and started screaming and one of those dogs was in the yard. We eventually dispatched two of them and have not seen the third since.

Welcome to the forum, msusoccer Did the landowner just shrug it off? Seems kinda cold and indifferent to me. If you can't get him to take care of the problem you'll either have to live with it or move. Some folks....

Unfortunately we had to "take care or this problem" once a few years back. We just coldn't hunt. We would hear something moving in the woods and out would come the dog, very frustrating! Now he has two more doge. They come to camp only. We scratch their ears and tell them to go home, and they do. Seems like these have been taught some manners.

The dog owner said he was sorry and said he would do something about it but never did. Im thinking about trying to call the dog over to me next time i see him and take him into the nearest towns pound. i know he wouldnt be happy to pay to get the dog out or maybe he will think it just died and not go to the pound and it will go to a home that watches it. and it would solve our problem.

This is a tough one as I really love dogs but they absolutely do not belong in the woods roaming at free will. At the same time I have a neighbor like yours, unresponsible. My advise...

Do you really need to ask that question? I know if I was payng good money to hunt, I would not let some dog keep running the deer off!

Just one more chance to practice your sniper skills. You did your part by talking to the "owner." His right to own a dog does not supercede your right to hunt the land you are paying for. Punch his ticket.

For a matter of contradiction: You've already talked to the owner about this (and would hope adamantly), so be careful what you do; when/how.

I am not sure what the laws are here in Texas. However, I know in Colorado, If a dog is harassing livestock or wildlife on your property or leased property, you may as Bulldawg says "Terminate with Extreme Prejudice" without notification of the dog's owner.

Personally, I would send the dog owner a written notice about the dog chasing your 'livestock' in a most polite and helpful manner(just to cover my 6). And, if you don't take care of it yourself, I'm pretty sure a hunter will when the dog chases off that buck that they just lined up on.
Regardless of what and how this issue is resolved, remember that this dog owner is your ...neighbor. So there may be some nasty repercussions [kinda like the old westerns ...'you kilt my Pa' and 'Hatfield vs. McCoy' type of things]is a walk in the park.

It is my understanding that Texas law allows a person to protect their livestock, however, deer are not livestock. There is not a state leash law, so when we take matters into our own hands, we take the risk of being the one who is wrong. There is not a good answer to this problem, I would just say be very careful, you might be the one having to answer to a sherif for cruelty to animals.

I believe that it would be illegal to solve the problem with a bang! And if it was legal i would worry about the dog owner figuring out what happened and we would have another problem. I am just going to look for another lease and hopefully i can find one! And will leave the problem for the land owner.

Trap the dogs and take them to Arkansas to sell. Sure to fetch a pretty penny. Spanky
