I have one of those and use it on my kitchen knifes. It does not touch my hunting knives. As I mentioned before I would skip the Loray's, Lanskys, and others and just get the DMTs.

Like OldTexan, my woodworking tools (lathe tools, chisels, and Handplane irons) are all the latest super dooper steel, but the DMT diamond plates sharpen them extremely well and very fast. Some of that steel is so hard and tough that I suspect you would have to use diamond plates to sharpen them. You could spend all day on one knife blade if you had a glazed over oilstone. That never happens with the DMT plates. I've got maybe 10 handplanes, twice that many chisels, and maybe 15 lathe irons. I don't like to waste time sharpening, even though it isn't really a waste of time, so I'm into speed. DMT diamond plates give me speed and efficiency. I keep saying the same old thing, so maybe ya'll think I'm in DMT marketing. I'm not. I just gravitated over the years to what works best and fastest and I discarded what didn't work so well. Actually, I first encountered the DMT plates at a woodworking school, where an instructor showed us how to sharpen well and quickly. He didn't have to show me twice....

Get 2 grades of Arkansas stone, the fine and the very fine which is almost see through. As stated earlier the angle is not so important as the consistency. My meat knives and skinning knives I will hone on a steeper angle than the knife I carry in my pocket everyday. Although, truth be told the knife in my pocket is the one I generally end up using for everything. I've used most every kind of stone from the diamond, to ceramic, to steel, and the only common denominator I could find with all of them was faster blade wear. You can also buy all kinds of contraptions that will do it for ya, but I personally will not, I think more of my knives than that. Truly hand sharpening a knife is an art, but one that is not hard to master with a little time, consistency, and PRACTICE!!!!

Oh and just a little side note. The knife I carry everyday will not be used as a screwdriver or a gasket scraper, but I have used it as a means of castration and a toothpick.

I was given a 4 sided diamond set many years ago when I did my first THF Vet hunt and it sit's proudly in the kitchen. No sense having a knife if it isn't sharp. I've got a set of chicago Cutlery knives that show years of use but they're still sharper than most people need. When I use one in the kitchen the first thing I do is give it a couple of strokes on the stone, I can't stand a dull knife.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Question.....Does anyone other than me hate serrated blades?
To me they are dangerous and I've cut or knicked myself darned near everytime I've used one. Give me well kept, sharp regular blade.

I agree with feech edge pro is the way to go! The only downside is that all your buddies will be asking you to sharpen their knives too.

I been practicing for 50 yrs some days I can and some days I can't. I've also bought quite a few stones, hones, steels and gadgets. Still it's was always hit or miss.
I bought a Work Sharp, now I can sharpen even a cheap knife and clean a couple of hogs with it. Afterward I hit it a couple of licks on the work shop and I'm ready to go again next week!
I also recently bought one of those knives that you change the blade on, they're AWESOME!

All I use is whet stone. I've use those diamond stones before. They may work for others. I can get a better edge on a whet stone.

Sandpaper, read up on the Scary Sharp Sharpening System. I can sharpen gravers so sharp that they cut steel.

I use a 14" Ouachita bench stone, a dexter round steel and an F D ick flat steel.

I have never had any problems sharpening knives; until now. My Granddaughters husband made a small knife for me using rebar. It had no edge so I sharpened it until it did. Now, it will cut a piece of notebook paper but not leather.
I have lots of different stones, the wheels used at the gun show, ceramic sticks, etc. I think it needs to be hollow ground but I don't know how to do that.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
