Talking to my buddy up in Minnesota and he mentioned they are proposing a teal season too. That's not the stupid part. The most idiotic thing I've heard is, during this teal season you're allowed one "mistake" bird. Meaning you "accidentally" pop that resident mallard up there and you're still in the clear. What in the world are they thinking? What's y'all's take on it?
We interrupt this marriage for hunting season.

I get what you're saying. However, I feel you're opening up that avenue to shoot your teal and then purposely shoot that other bird. If it isn't allowed you're more likely to do your best and avoid the mistake bird. I understand accidents happen, I've done it a time or two in the past.

Whats to keep guys from shooting a mistake duck everyday and just claiming a 6 teal 1 mallard limit every time they are able.

In the grand scheme of things, it will actually HELP our big duck numbers. The feds only allow X amount of hunting days each year. If they are given a 10 day teal season, thats 10 less days of big duck season. One hunter can only kill 10 "mistake" mallards in 10 days, as opposed to 50 mallards in 10 days. So there, now your glass is half full.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

I've witnessed a few barneys/topwaters/douchers that (by definition) came in late and setup 50 yards away proudly water swat some grebes during early teal. I wonder if that counts as a legal mistake.

Only one that flys and looks somewhat similar to a teal would be a spoonie... be cool if they added them to the early season since they are plentiful during that time. Still not hard to tell the difference with bright orange legs

Why release it to the public, Why not only tell the wardens/rangers/enforcers the new rule. I bet there would be a lot less bad reps for those wardens. That would've helped keep the hunters honest, and the populations high, not that 10 mallards would really make a difference. But I guess hindsight is 20-20.

This could actually be a good time to have a real tag for a duck. Like you get one mistake bird tag for the entire teal season.

I was not the shooter, but have seen a group of teal buzz in on a spread, boom boom boom, two dead teal and a grebe. The grebe was flying with them. It's not common something like that happens and I could see the mistake thing being abused..
