Seems every year me and my son do a death march duck hunt, it is kinda come a tradition that we joke about, well I’m glad we got that annual hunt out of the way today.

We got a 24 hr hall pass from the BOSS, so off we go scouting Sat afternoon, found this hole holding ducks, stay at cheap motel, hit it in the morning. To get where the ducks wanted to be, we had to walk like 100 yards or so thru major muck, then set up. My son completely bit it twice, major mud face plant, I mean completely coming out of the heel of his boots and right into the mud . By the end of the hunt, we were mud monsters, would have taken more pix but camara covered in mud, took these early morn, we missed alot, should have shot a lot better, but we did have an adventure.

That smart weed molly sitting in, that is import from me about 100 yards away, believe me there was nothing but pure mud around us, all tho I made a nice bed for molly to lay on, that quickly turn to muke, I though molly did well laying in that suff!!!.

Here is a bonus pic form last week, it got deleted with the conversion..

That's about like the lake I have been hunting. But It's only about a 30-40 yd walk through the stuff. I need to get some layout blinds though so we can just set up on the bank.

This Sunday in the mud, we were in a great spot were the birds wanted to be, we just stuck out like a sore thumb with no cover, even in our layout blinds. If I would have taken all the killer weed off our blind, and just covered our blind with mud, and covered molly with mud and her burlap blind, we would have probably done pretty well, if I did not have my boy with me, I probably would have gone thru that extra work. But I tell ya, I was worn out, I had to make several trips back and forth thru that mud, Ryan could not carry his gear thru that muck, the boy tried, but end up face first in the mud .

Any case, once we got set up, my son says “This is the part of duck hunting I like, relaxing.” LOL. Another funny thing he kept saying as we were hiking thru all that muck “Dad, this is funner than Chunky Cheeses.”

We ended up with one Gadwall, should have had more tho, I had a pic of Molly bring it back but the pic did not come out. We saw a lot of birds flying before legal, after legal it slowed down quit a bit, but still saw good numbers, just could not get them to decoy. We had one single come in, Ryan took 2 shots and missed, as the bird was trying to escape flying strait up, I had a great shot and would have dropped him for sure, but forgot to turn the safety off, hate that.

We had a pair of pintails land out side our spread, out of range. We had a group of mallards work our spread good, first pass looked like they were going lock and come in, and they flare, second pass they got much closer then flare, but flew right over our blinds, they were in range, I should have called the shot, but I thought they may just commit on a 3rd pass, but they never came back, when they flew over our blind they probably said “I see you” .

We did have one good flock of gads that we worked that cupped and came in, but we were looking right into the sun (that was a problem all morning), as we rose up to shoot, they flock broke left of the sun, and Ryan shot at those, I shot one that broke right and it just got too far/out of range on me.

The wind was really messing with Ryan’s blind all morning as well, when he would pop it open, the wind (to our back) would blow it back down, and the sun in our eyes, it was some tough hunting...

That first pic makes it look like you are a good 45 yards from the decoys. From your report it sounded like a good hole but there was no good place to set up.

I think the pic makes it look further. Look at my tracks, you can see it is about 10 steps or so to the water, I'm guessing we are about 10 yards from the water, the pocket about 25 yards out total. They come in it is pretty close shot.

What kind of camera are you using, Guy? Those pics look real good. A couple of those have real good depth of field effects. Looks cool. Sorry the birds didn't cooperate, though.

Glad y'all had a great time. Trips out of town like that really make the adventure. I know I have made a transition in recent years where a lot of my hunting involves more expeditions rather than the quick runs to the local places.

Awesome pictures Guy. Ditto on what camera?

Sony DCS-F717, I bought it in 2003.

I never have been able to take action shots with it, they all come out blurry. It takes some nice still pics.

Cool, I figured it wasn't just your ordinary little digital camera. I've been thinking about getting a real nice Nikon. I would love to start taking some really nice pics and filling up my photo albums. Keep it up.
