Its the $399 model at Academy that is guaranteed to shoot 1 1/2" MOA. At the Academy by my house, they have 2 in .270 and both are sub 1" groups on their factory paper target that comes with the gun.

It has a green plastic stock and is pre-drilled for mounts, etc. I held it and it feels nice.

I want to buy my father-in-law a rifle and I'm thinking about that gun for him. I'll likely put a Nikon ProStaff (or Bushnell) scope on it and I'll go sight it in before Christmas since we're going hunting the weekend after.

Anyway...I think its a good deal, but didn't want a Remington 710 type rifle. It looks well made (by Howa in Japan) and I think I'm going to 'pull the trigger'...no pun intended!!!

Quality rifle for a good price and def go at least with the nikon for the setup and you'll be in business.

I have helped a couple of people sight in the Vanguard in 257 WBY mag. I was very impressed with the accuracy. I did not like the bolt throw and the bolt kept hitting my hand when we would shoot. A good gun for the money. sub 1 inch groups with factory ammo with one of the 257's I helped one of my students sight in.

I also like the Remington SPS in the blue composite in
.270 WSM for the money. Hard to beat.

If you are getting a Vanguard in 270 Winchester I would opt for the 257 WBY Mag. You will get a flatter shooting rifle with similar recoil.

Go with the Nikon. You will be happy you did. I personally prefer Leupold VX2 and higher. You can adjust your MOA for distance.

Thanks.

I shoot with a Nikon Monarch, but this rifle is for my father-in-law that only hunts once a year. He doesn't 'need' a top of the line scope, but I want to buy him something good. I think ProStaff is as good as I can afford for him.

Make sure that you can live with the trigger pull. I've heard that it's fairly painful to upgrade the trigger. Aside from that, I'd say go with the .270 for the good, cheap ammo.

Any certified gunsmith can adjust the pull and take the creep out of the factory trigger for about $50.00. It is almost a "must do" with these rifles before you take it to the range for the first time.
I have owned several Vanguards over the last 10 years and still do have a couple (.270 and 257 Wby). The Vanguard continues to impress me with their accuracy. In most cases, after a good trigger job and quality scope, they will exceed the capabilities of most shooters. Great gun at a great price.
