So i was thinking. Recently i killed a deer, and after cleaning it i headed home. I walk into the house and momma says " u stink like deer." Which got me thinking would the smell of deer that we get on our clothes from handling and cleaning the deer help in masking human scent while hunting, or can the deer (alive) smell the dead deer u cleaned. Lol. I know its a little out there but it could maybe just work i almost put my camos in a platic bag to help keep the scent instead of the washing.

do you use a corn feeder? store your clothes in a empty bag of corn.
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

In my opinion, there is only one way to keep a deer from smelling you. Keep the wind blowing from the deer to you, in other words stay down wind. All the cloths, all the spray and the stuff you can think of will not keep a mature deer from smelling you. The stuff might, and that is a big might in my mind, help lesson your smell but it will not mask your smell. You cannot outsmart a deer, elk, coyote or most any other critters nose. The best you can do is stay down wind, be still and be quite.
Good luck.

The wind is your best friend. Or worst enemy. A good scent control regime is a great tool, as is a good cover scent. But if they never get down wind of you then you are good regardless. On everyplace I hunt though they come in from many directions. Often down wind.

Often down wind. i have brought this up a few times....my places are the same. the guys that dont believe in scent control just say to "be downwind," and while i agree thats the best policy, it doesnt always happen no matter where you set up. i dont necessarily believe in scent control products, but i can afford them to an extent and want to try to give myself every advantage i can. and i was serious on the bag of corn thing, thats where all my clothes go. its too hard trying to keep them "scent free" when you have to drive to your lease every time you hunt, or when you ride a 4 wheeler, or sweat yor butt off walking 400 yards to your stand in a snowman outfit. and its too hard trying to guess "which cover scent works best for this time of year?" just try to smell like food, it isnt hard and it cant hurt.

I dont think you would want to smell like a food source. The last thing you want to do is bring attention to your location. I know what you guys mean about them coming in down wind often though. Best thing i have found is to get up high.

i think that could be true in some cases but for the most part we hunt near food anyway so the scent is everywhere.
another thing, guys that use any kind of attractant, dont the deer need to be downwind to pick it up anyway? rifle hunters wouldnt have a problem so much but with a bow that pretty much means they will be downwind (to some degree) of you too.

Buy doe in heat buy the case. Use half bottle per hunt. Just pour it on you. You can't beat the wind, period

I have read many times over the years that deer can decipher up to 7 different smells at the same time. I don't know how they know that but I know I can put out skunk scent and the deer can still smell me at times so I figure they can at least decipher two smells at once.
So my take on your question........Covering yourself in deer scent might buy you some time but the deer most likely will still figure you out.

they are like dogs, the best analogy i have heard about their nose is when a human walks into a house and there is stew cooking on the stove he smells stew, when a dog walks in he smells the potatoes and the carrots and the onions and the beans, etc...
its the same principal as drug smugglers that use masking agents to wrap drugs, mustard, hot sauce, motor oil, coffee, it works to a degree, but there is still an odor of narcotics in there too.

Thanks for the responses. I think im gonna focus alil more on my tripod placements to ensure i have a good place to hunt nomatter where the wind is blowing from to use it to my advantage. I just got my first bow kill last week. Had the north wind straight in my face, and the does came in from the north, never knew i was there till one got hit. Thanks again.

Ive hunted in my work clothes and as long as the wind is right.....all the scent control you can possibly think of and apply will not matter if the wind is wrong. Hunt the wind.....the animals will do their part.
