I am new to the forum. I apologize if this topic has been posted in the past. I did not locate it in the search. I am looking for a quality scope mount and rings for my new .308. I have not decided on the exact scope but will follow the advice in previous posts and go with a Vortex or Leupold.

There's a lot of rings that are good. But one that has some issues is the front dove tail and the rear windage screw type mounts. The rear screws come loose, and the ears that hold the screws in place can get sheared off. I've seen this many times.
It's hard to beat a good picatinny rail and rings that bolt to it. It will be very sturdy.

I have to agree.
You will see there is more rigidity with a picatinny set up.
Personally, I use Seekins Precision and I love them. Others that are great are from American Rifle Company(ARC), Badger Ordinance, TPS, Leupold Mark 4 lines, and Talley.
What goal have you set for you to accomplish with this rifle?

I love the picatinny setups and the fact that you can get them for everything these days. It wasn't like that just a few years ago. That said, a lot of the mounting setups that are made for tactical use are expensive! If this is a starter rifle for you or you're just getting into the game, you don't have to get fancy with the bases/rings. A set of weaver style bases can be had cheap, and a set of Warne rings would work great. I'm just using Warne as an example. Weaver style bases are common and affordable, and there are a million different rings out there for them. Warne, Burris "Zee", Weaver, Leupold "PRW", and so on.

For the most part, I have always used Leupold rings/mounts. Never had any issues with the Leupolds, but I have had some issues with the cheaper mounts you buy at places like wal mart. I decided its better to just buy 1 quality scope, and 1 set of quality rings. Install, zero, and shoot the gun forever and not worry about it any more. Back when I used the cheap stuff, I would have to rezero every year.

I've beat the crap out of EGW bases, and no problems, ever! For the money, you can't go wrong.
Badger Ordinance or Talley Tactical rings have served me very well. In fact, my 260 Rem with an EGW 20 MOA pic base, Badger Ordinance rings, and SS 5-20X, have held zero so well, that I've been hitting as small as a dime at 100 yards, cold bore.

Thanks for all the responses this is my first bolt gun. FiremanJG I read your posts often, I have learned a lot. Where can I get the best deal on the EGW base and the rings?? Skylar@SWFA I got the rifle for hunting and target shooting. I retired from SWAT several years ago but I was always an entry guy. My son and I have begun doing some hog hunting and we just enjoy spending time together shooting at my department range. My goal is to become accurate out to 500 yards. I have looked at several scopes on your website but have not made a decision yet. I am not looking for the cheapest scope and mount. Just looking for the most for my money.

I really like my seekins rings and base. They are really good quality and worth the money. I got mine from swfa as well.

SWFA is the first place I would look. Call Skylar, and mention the THF, he will take care of you.

Talley. Lap them, mount it. Sight it in and call it done. You'll never have a prollum with em.

if your going out to 500 you should def get a rail, and spend at least 1 hundred on rings. check snipers hide, as there are always high end rings used for sale there. i would recommend nightforce, vortex, or seekins rings.
