Just like the title says, I have a friend that is thinking he needs to add a Zebra to his trophy room. He was thinking of booking in Africa, but I have heard they make good table fare. Is that true? Also what would a Texas Zebra hunt cost?

He will likely be able to fly to Africa and shoot one and the cost come out close to the same but with the option to take several other animals. The African game is pretty dang high here.

I ate zebra when I was in Namibia. Excellent eating. Of course, we were eating just the choice cuts and the rest went to the supermarket. While it is true, the trophy fees on game in Africa is lower (as long as you hunt the animals that are indigenous to the area that you are in), there is much to consider when planning a trip. Airfare is expensive, daily rates are generally $350 per day and up. Shipping your trophies back is expensive. Throw in tipping and misc. spending and you are looking at a hefty tab. However, every hunter should experience an African trip at least once. Many will go back time and again.
That being said, there are many ranches here in Texas that offer a fantastic hunting experience. I often hear people complain about the cost of hunting here. It is usually from those who have never operated a hunting ranch. When you have purchased a property, erected a high fence, stocked the place with animals, fed through good times and droughts, built and operated a lodge, dealt with guides and most of all, dealt with hunters, you won't think the price of hunting is too expensive.

Rick- I'm trying to add on a budget safari to my Africa mission trip this summer. I really didn't think it was possible (due to the cost), but there was a guy on here who had an affordable plains game 8 night hunt. How much does it cost to ship the trophies back here? Also, how much should I budget for tipping? You also mentioned misc. spending- what should I expect in this category? (Sorry to derail the original question- perhaps I should start my own thread somewhere)

TABLEFARE QUESTION: I read all the posts about the table fare being very good but I wonder how different the meat could be compared to DONKEY or HORSE?

I'm so curious on the meat too. I'd love to hunt one but we eat 99% ground meat. I can't wrap my mind around ground zebra in tacos or whatever...

TABLEFARE QUESTION: I read all the posts about the table fare being very good but I wonder how different the meat could be compared to DONKEY or HORSE? I have personally never eaten horse or donkey. But I have ate Zebra a bunch and it was awesome. Now people that have eaten horse and zebra has told me that the meat is different.

Zebra was one of the best tasting of all the meats we tried in Africa.
I would take another Zebra in a heartbeat just for the meat.
