I just had a few questions for you all out there. I just purchased my first GSP and he will be shipped to me next week. He is out of a very good kennel with great bloodlines. I am new to the training of GSPs and really looking for some direction on a good trainer around San Antonio. Also, at what age is best to send them and what should I work on prior to them going? I am looking for both a hunting dog as well as a family dog. Thanks

Just enjoy him for a few months. You might tie him out a little while each day. Maybe break him into the Gun.

New to training GSPs? What else have you trained? Most trainers wait until 6 months.
Love the color, nice looking pup. Is there any DK in him? Which kennel is he out of?
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Talk to Bonnie Sue at Cibolo Creek Kennels. She did wonders with my GSP 210.659.0914 You might want to hurry she's talking retirement. You can also check in with www.gspcsa.orgThey have a self training facility off of I-35

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

John Rabidou@ Uodibar Kennels in Hondo TX has produced a lot of good bird dogs under his training. Also has a good line of GSP's.

Trainers are 6 to at least 10 months away. Start with tying him out and letting him be a puppy.

Remember to play with him to get him to retrieve and mind and don't exempt him from loud noise. I had 2 really high $ pups from some of ref trainers bloodlines and mine and every pup in the litter was Gun Shy. This seems to be prevalent in field trail bred pointers mostly. None of my setters have ever been. I also believe owners contribute to making their dogs gun shy.

Darrel Lyman 573-820-1729. He is in Pearsall, really great with the dogs. Has both of mine right now, Vizsla and GSP. Call him up if your interested and he will let you come or and show you his process. Really a friendly man, with alot of knowledge.

I bought a book called gun dog years ago. I started with that when he was a puppy. Let him be a puppy for a while. Mine is now 3 and is a heck of a dog. Heres a photo of him when he was a baby. We are done hunting for this year and I think he is depressed. Great dogs

Good looking pup, esp for a short hair! Haha. I have a DD. Mine was my first dog ever to have much less train. To say I was intimidated to train would be an understatement. I did the training myself, made some mistakes but learned more than I could ever imagine. I would recommend training yourself, read the books now while you have plenty of time, expose expose exposé to everything. Parks, soccer games, tractor supply get him socialised and comfortable when he is with you, let him know you are the pack leader. I would get obedience down very well thn focus on the hunting part, these dogs are smart and natural. The Koehler method of dog training is a good one for obedience, you can find them used for less than 10 bucks. Most important, have fun and enjoy your dog.

I got Briles out of San Marcos. It was a joint breeding with southwind and allebeck kennels. Not sure is they have any breedings scheduled right now, but they should have a good idea of who is. http://www.southwindgsp.com
