Saw on Cabelas that they have j keel weights that you can hook to rubber strap and hook to the keel. So I was thinking I could just melt my weights that I already have and make them. So my question is, how do I make the mold. Make it out of wood and soak it in water? Anyone have any experience doing something like this? Gets old wrapping the weight around the head.

I make weights for my carved decoys.. I just use 2x4 scraps I find laying around. I don't soak it at all, just carve what I want with my dremel in the wood and pour. I usually get a dozen out of a "mold" then I switch. Just personal preference. After a while the sharper edges start to burn away, so I make a new one.

People still wrap up their decoy lines?
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

You mean there's other ways than wrapping the line around the decoy? Lol joking. I've thought bout the texas rig but I just thought I'd work with what I already got. Saw a thing on making the texas. Looks pretty simple. Thanks for the input

With Texas rigs it's still cheaper to make your own weights. Save the lids from gatorade bottles and fill them with lead. the smaller lids are about 4oz, the bigger ones are about 6.

I have the k shaped weights for my deep water diver decoys. I don't like the rubber part as I am always afraid it will break.
You can easily make a mold with a wooden mold. Instead of trying to pour it with a hole for the line, just drill it or punch it out later.

Haha no it's not. It's a name I used at bars when talking to women just in case they got clingy or nutty. Worked pretty good. Wish it was my last name though.

That's some good info. I'm gonna try a couple this weekend and see just how it turns out. On the texas rig how much would supplies cost?

you can get the softer decoy cord on ebay. About $15 for 500'. They have the crimps at academy in the decoy section for like $1.50. The expensive part is the weights unless you can find your own lead to melt. We made ours with the gatorade caps. We went to one of those used tire shops in the rough part of town and the guy filled us a 5 gallon bucket with old lead weights. Its a little bit of work but worth it for all the $ you save.
If you wanna save even more $ just use fishing knots to tie the cord off instead of using crimps. Seems to snag less this way too.

If you have never rigged decoys and not going for a specific rig like my deep water divers, then by all means go Texas rig. Cost = $12 for a roll of .095 Ace hardware weed eater string "Ace brand only" $1.00 for a pack of crimps at academy $?.?? For the weights you choose You can use fishing tackle swivels, I don't see the need

Go texas rig. Setting up and picking up takes a fraction of the time. And the cost for rigging up is cheap if you can get a good price on weights. I go on ebay and find 4oz egg weights for a fraction of the cost.
