The regulation is set in place for a reason. The biologists and wildlife scientists set these limits for the conservation and healthy numbers of said species not just because "you want to shoot more." We had that attitude with other species in the past and it led to extinction and many near extinctions. Just be happy that you have wildlife to hunt despite the limits!

True the arial counts do not include wood ducks as their habitat is not the open prairie, or lakes that the aerial counts work best on. They do however use other means to determine within a reasonable estimate what the population is. This is done on a state sharing level, by using banding data, nest box surveys, Listening route surveys, hunter harvest surveys and some ground visual data, etc.. ect... This data is then used on the wood duck population just like all the data formulas on the major breeding ground duck surveys to sustain a health population. Currently 3 is the number the Biologist and research experts have determined is the bag limit number.

We took about 5 this season. We found a flock that typically comes back in the area either to raise their young or have thier young in the off season. I don't know if they are local or migrators. Last count was prob 12-20. Thinned out the flock but not by so much that it will decimate a potentially bigger harvest next year hopefully.

I think 3 is a good number until the population rises. I love them. Great eating and a beautiful bird to see up close in the blind if you can find an area they like in the woods.

Shoulda had my limit of 3 today but ended up with 1.

I don't always shoot deer, but when I do, I prefer B&C's.

im disappointed when i see woodies fling. the conversation usually goes like this:
"ducks on the left, get down."
"nevermind, wood ducks."

The wood duck population south of Tyler has seem to decline dramatically. It was common to have hundreds of wood ducks in our timber holes. The past few years it has declined to just a few this year replaced by gadwall and spoonies.
