It's easier to do than you think. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I left my rifle in the field one time. I was guiding some guys and leaned it against a tree when it was time to field dress. I gutted the animal and helped load it then we cleaned up. There was enough going on I didn't remember leaving it in the field until 45 minutes later when I was nearly home. We even had great post-kill pics with my rifle leaning against the tree in the background.

I cast no stones and really hope the owner gets his shotgun back.

I've done it too. If you spend a lot of time on your lease during the off season doing things that doesn't require carrying it, it can be easy to forget you had it once you get side tracked while hunting.

If it was a public lake, there is probably some government agency that has jurisdiction over it. If you were the one who lost it, this is where you would probably call first to report having left it. And for that reason, it would be the best place to report having found it.

Under most circumstances I would agree, but it appears he has found the owner by posting it here.

Found my gun the hard way when my brother n law borrowed it and left it against a tree. Went back with the jeep to get it and he let me know right when we found by yelling stop you just ran it over with the front tire. It had fallen over into the road. 1100 is still going strong though had to glue the wood fore grip together.

welcome

There are those who read of what others have done, then there are those like me who do what others read about.

I once was hunting in a new area with a heavy pack and my rifle over my shoulder. I walked about a mile and 1/2 from my stand to my tent. When I arrived at the tent took off the pack I realized my rifle wasn't there. Needless to say I was sick. As I had gone through some really heavy brush and cover. I felt I would never find it. I was very lucky as I had left on my GPS all day and the track feature was on. Although not that accurate I was able to back track with some reasonable accuracy the entire route I had taken. It took me about 3 hours of back and forth tracking but I eventually found my Browning BBR 06. I must have walked past it 3 times I my search. When pushing through thick bush I must have caught it on the branches and my sling came apart and I never felt it fall off my shoulder, It was one of the worst and best days of my life
