I was told to use corn and Diesel for pig bait and that it works best. Is this true? If not what do you think the best pig bait is?

See thread here... http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4892625/1Is diesel mixed with corn the best? LOL, not according to lots of "experts" who purport their own special recipes as noted in the thread above. Diesel will help keep some other animals out of the corn and the amount used is general very small.

I use straight corn in traps until I start having raccoon and deer problems eating my corn before hogs get there. Once I have a problem, then I add a little diesel, and it keeps the deer away and 90% of coons in my area. I also like to sweeten the pot with fresh fish heads/guts if they're available- the smell attracts the hogs pretty darned well (yes, i'm serious).
I also like spoiled milk and corn mixture. I probably catch more hogs on this than anything else.
I have tried kool-aid, gatorade, and other smelly attractants, but nothin works quite like sour milk.
I didn't believe the diesel and corn mixture either til I tried it. It does work, if you don't mind putting diesel soaked corn in the environment.

I'm not big on adding Diesel to nature/environment either. The sour milk sounds like to perfect ticket. Thanks.

I have had 0 luck with the commercial products.
I poured an entire box of Hog Wild and Pig out mixed with corn and saw the hogs stroll right by it to go to the feeder.

A friend that worked for Ben E Keith used to mix his own special pig slop with the out of date beer and deer corn. He'd let that ferment for a couple of days in the Texas sun... it smelled so bad when he'd open that bucket but the pigs came running.

We eat the hogs we shoot.
No way I would ever put diesel on any corn.
What I have noticed is that difference is what hogs hate. If you always put something on your corn don't stop. The fact that there is some kind of change keeps the hogs away. As far as attracting them corn with more corn works. They are opportunistic feeders. If the acorns are falling they are eating acorns, if there is food in fields they are eating it. If the corn is closest to their bed they will eat it. The only thing that is guaranteed with hogs is when its hot they will come to water.

I second what Colt is saying as well. If the hogs are in the area. ( lots of sign like rooting, rubs, etc) just good ol corn will work. If there is no sign, I've not had any luck bringing them in. Look where they are and just about anything will work.

It looks like there are as many different ways to attract hogs as there are hogs to eat it.
The diesel has interested me because coons get to my bait before the hogs get there. I share the concern that I don't want to eat a diesel fed hog. Just how much is used per 10 pounds of corn?
My concerns may be moot since I can't control what all the neighbors use for hog bait. Those suckers make the rounds to every food source in the area like teenagers in daddy's car hitting the fast food joints.

But that is exactly what it is supposed to do!
I think the notion of all these special recipes is just a bunch of wishful thinking, LOL. Hogs will eat just about anything sooner or later, but not always. That one bait is reported to work at a given time in place is no more a testament to its effectiveness than just plain corn working or somebody else's special blend.

I think they like to wallow in petroleum products. I've poured diesel on an old rag and tied it around a huisache tree close to a game trail and came back to find the rag torn to shreds on the ground a few yards away and the tree covered in mud and runs. Yes, it's an anecdote.
I used to put corn in a 5 gallon bucket and toss it while VERY LIGHTLY misting it with a garden sprayer full of diesel - maybe a few tablespoons for five gallons. That was the stuff I would put in bait holes and it seemed to work fine, but plain $6.95 corn from Buckys would probably work exactly the same. Since I started hunting them at night I've essentially quit bating except for the deer feeders (which we allow pigs access to).
You can drink a tablespoon of diesel or gasoline to kill a tapeworm (according to an old Army survival handbook), I doubt it would be a pleasant experience, though. In any event, assuming one pig eats all five gallons of my corn misted with a few tablespoons of diesel and all of it gets absorbed into its body... I would still have to eat every scrap of that pig to get a tablespoon of diesel... Knee cartilage, eyeballs, guts, sphincter, everything. If you don't want to eat a pig that's eaten diesel treated corn, then you definitely don't want to eat pigs that drink out of the Trinity river for example.

They love the smell of chemicals... especially any oils or sticky based stuff they can rub on them to keep bugs off... look at all your telephone poles... best hunting time is when a new pole gets put in for any reason

thats what ya call Army Tough think they have made some improvements in Army Survival Handbook. am thinking diecel is more for attracting hogs ftom distance, have tride store bought, no luck, hogs could have moved out. for smell have gotten 40# bag flake mollasses, & make a drip, while checking drips startled several hogs bedded 30yrds from drip. Not saying drip had any thing ta do with it
