A buddy I work with was going back to see his family and we started talking about going mule deer hunting so we decided that he could see his family and we could go hunting also. We were able to get tags and when we got there NM had change some of the zones for muzzle loading so we had to regroup and hunt in an area that he was not familiar with. We scouted and hunted for a few days only seeing a few does and was getting worried that the game was not there. So the next morning we decided to look over a burn area to see if we could locate some sign that they were in the area. We were glassing a ridge about 1000 yds away when we spotted a buck going to bed down, so I took my gps and located the spot he bedded down in. Then we drove the side by side to the ridge he was on and started in above him to keep the wind in our favor. We were no more the hundred yds in and we started seeing deer sign exactly what we had been looking for. We got on a good trail and about quarter of a mile in this buck jumped up in front of me and I pulled up but he disappeared. My buddy said he should have stopped so I slipped up to where he turned off the trail and he stood behind some brush about 30 yds away. I fired the ole TC off and he ran passed us with a huge hole behind his shoulder then we heard him crash. Then the work begin getting him off the side of the mountain. I hope you enjoyed the story because I sure enjoyed the hunt!

circlep..If you don't mind me asking what part of the N.M. are you hunting in. The reason why I ask is the Southeast part of the state around Mayhill, Weed area has seen a big decline in the deer population over the last 10 years. CWD, number in mountain lions is what the locals say is the reason. Just wondering what area you saw the deer in. Thanks

We hunted in the southwest part of the state on the north side of the Gila National Forest.

circlep... Thanks for answering my question. Nice looking bucks! Love hunting those mulies. Hopefully someday my old hunting grounds will get back to normal. Looks like you have a honey hole!
