I've been wanting to go. Last year there was a bunch around where we deer hunt. Didn't take the time to get out there though.

Well. They fly out of heavy cover, usually yaupon holly under big forest area, at night and eat earthworms all night. They return to the thickets pre-dawn and lay low all day. You hunt them during the daytime with a dog.
Good holders for pointers!

Find where a creek bottom crosses a back country dirt road. Stand there at dark with a cylinder choke and be quick but you aint hear that from me.

They are fun to shoot but rarely get in any large concentrations.

I'm deer hunting in young county right now, but have Dash with me. Later today I will have him out in our creek bottom looking for woodcock. They don't stay long, but we got a huntable migration of them out west here if I am lucky with the timing. Dove were thick during the split, but that last front must have pushed them out. Most are gone. But hoping it pushed the woodcock in. The ground has stayed wet so the conditions are right.

Blaze with a young county woodcock Dec 23rd two years ago.

Wow. Started deer hunting in the morning and woodcock hunting in the afternoon. Got limits everyday and ate them bacon wrapped each evening. Good stuff.
Tried new areas everyday. If find good yaupon holly and have a dog that points they are all over the national forest. Never picked a spot that didn't hold birds. 6 to 8 points every outing. Some aren't shoot able when u flush them but I just hunted until I got my bird limit. Gotta have a dog! Gotta shoot at em.

I walked this forest for decades w/o a dog and never saw many/any. They're everywhere.........
