What is y'all's thoughts on a breed that is easy to train for quail hunting?

German shorthairs

I'm not sure if its the breed or the dog, but the GSP would be a good one. The closer working pointing dogs don't have to hold point as long.

I would say get a English setter, or English pointer if your only using it for quail.

Pointers are one function dogs mostly hyper bred for performance and must be kennel'd or chained when not hunting. Labs, English Spaniels both hunt multiple game and retrieve plus make pets. I have a Gordon Setter and he's great on quail but same deal have to keep confined. But not nearly as hyper as most pointers.

I've never seen a lab that can hang with a pointer on quail. They typically range right under your feet, don't have a stylish point, and a pointer will kill them with his nose. But, they do retrieve and they do make a great pet. And they will train to be a house dog ten times better. I would say a Brit or setter.

First find the breed that catches your eye. Then go look at the parents of the pup. If you like what you see in terms of hunt from the parents, and what you see in terms of calmness in the kennel, get a pup from that breeding.

Everything else is just conjecture.

BS and then this post is superb bs. I have six pointer that run lose all time come when called and good house dobs and great bird dogs and I live on 1000 acres. Just depends on your relationship with the dog.

Brittany, English Pointer, Visla, Setter, GSP. Any of these (plus several more) can be great Quail dogs & companions, pick the one you think is the best looking & then find a good breeder with good bloodlines. Simple as that. This is nothing more than a Ford vs. Chevy type discussion.

What is a beginner bird dog?

One that is easy to find, doesn't cost a grand, has a good temperament so that it can easily bounce back from the first time trainers mistakes. Has lots of smarts so it's easier to train. A "right out of the box dog" so to speak.


Not a dog that has tons for drive and energy so that it's hard for first timer to control. Not a sensitive or soft dog.

I disagree. I haven't seen too many setters that were all that bright. Have seen many that were soft. Not a good pick for a beginner. The soft issue might also be more common with the Brittanys so I've heard but you tell me.

I think a good beginner dog, is a started one.

Here's the deal, I can't have a gsp cause my dad (theboyandi) won't allow it. He hates them. Don't ask me why cause I don't know. He likes Brittany's and will allow an english pointer The pointer really catches my eye. I'm 13 and want to train my own dog so that's were I sit. Thanks for all the input also
