Looking to get into the skeet/trap/sporting clay shooting, thinking about getting a over/under shotgun but with a budget about $1000. Have the option to purchase a new production Winchester 101 Field grade from a friend for $899. From what I know the new production guns are made in Belgium by FN, 28" barrels, 12 gauge and with Invector Plus chokes.
What do y'all think of this gun? Is 28" barrel too short for skeet? I've handled the gun and it fits me pretty well.
Thanks

If FN makes it then it's good. I've owned one of the Japan made 101's and it was a solid shotgun.

I've got a couple of the Japan guns. Definitely my favorites. I use them for skeet (informal) just because I like to practice with the same gun I hunt with, but I wouldn't call them true skeet guns. I get some funny looks sometimes when I tell someone I'm shooting skeet with a full choke.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

you going to shoot registered targets or go to the range/club twice a year? makes a big difference. the 101 is great but not a good competition gun. if you really wanna shoot reg birds , go get a Beretta 391 and spend the extra $ on lessons

I have the 101 by FN and it is a great gun for the price. You can get them on sale every so often at Cabelas for $999.00. I think they had it for $949.00 before Christmas.
I carry a gun because I'm too young to die, and too old to take a whoopin!

I also shoot alot of skeet with it and have no problem with 28 inch barrels.

They've moved the price up to 1099 now, but I can get it for 899 and it still has the sticker on it. I have the 101 by FN and it is a great gun for the price. You can get them on sale every so often at Cabelas for $999.00. I think they had it for $949.00 before Christmas.
