I gave my son his 1st Red Rider this October for his 6th birthday, and he's taken to it better than I could have hoped for. Well, it didnt take too long before he realized that his BB gun won't keep too much meat on the table, and he has pestered me non-stop to let him shoot a "grown up" gun. After convincing him that my 7 mag would forever end any future plans he had of becoming a hunter, pitcher, quarterback, or righthanded in general, I finally relented this past weekend and loaded up the old .22 lever action with scope that my dad let me use to kill my 1st squirrel with, and down the branch bottom we went. It was cold and windy, and there wasnt anything stirring. But we were patient, and after about an hour, I spotted one sitting on a bare limb. I sat down Indian style, and let him sit in my lap while I held the barrel for him. After a few minutes he was able to line up the crosshairs on him, thumbcocked the rifle, and fired off on him. Nothing. Repeat. Nothing. Repeat. Ol fox squirrel jumped and took cover in the fork of a tree. And there he stayed for 15-20 mins as we waited for him to move. Finally, I told my son to stand still while I walked around to the other side and let me know if he sees him move. He finally stuck his head out and I finished him off. My son had placed a lethal gut shot on him, and takes full credit (as he should) for killing his 1st squirrel.
Mr Whitetail, you may consider this your formal notice.

Good job dad. Just be careful about being close to the shooting lane for your son. He looks like he is pumped up.

Chasing squirrels taught me many lessons that I've been able to use chasing other game. It's a great way to start.

If you need a good recipe for Brunswick stew, pm me...but you (and your son) will have to go get a 2nd squirrel first!...or rabbit. recipe works well for rabbit as well.
