Ok guys I swear this is my last thread before I pull the trigger on one or the other. They look almost identical on ballistics charts to about 300 or so. With those of you that have experience with either or both. What's the pros and cons you see with the calibers?

People on here swear by both. 7mm-08 is deadly; a family friend recommended it to me. He regrets ever selling his.
I have firsthand seen what a 270 can do. It is amazing. I haven't seen 7mm-08, so I can't vouch for that.
It's basically SA vs LA and $$ ammo vs $ ammo
Unless you reload or don't care about ammo costs, I'd say 270. 270 is available everywhere, whereas I've seen a few Walmart and Academy(during the ammo craze) that didn't/don't carry 7mm-08.
What make/model/scope are you getting?

for Texas the 7mm08 is almost the perfect gun and the recoil is not much more than a .243, its a pleasure to shoot.

Probably a Leupold vx2 or something like that I'd say 4-12x40 at most. Open for suggestion that way as well

270 Pro: Owned and shot 270's for 40+ years. Easy access to ammo anywhere even during the panic, & always adv'ed as part of the BBRetailers Loss Leaders Big 4 at usually under $20 a box of basic SP bullets. Bullets designed specifically for 270WCF since 1925 have been tweaked and tuned for the best possible On Game performance, Mild recoil, MPBR No Holdover flat shooting out to 300 yards before bullet drop becomes an issue. Easy to reload for with a wide range of bullet/powder combinatioons from 100 gr's to 160 gr's. 270WSM available and still in production in both ammo and Rifles for 200+fps increase in factory ammo.
270 Con: Long Action- weighs 4+/- oz's more than a Short Action, LA may not be as stiff a receiver as a SA for Target Rifle application. Not as "sexy" as newer designs. Max factory ammo bullet weight at 160 gr's, or 15 gr's lighter than 7mm's. Loses 15-25 fps more per shorter inch of barrel than 308 based cases. 270 bullets have lower BC's for weight than 7mm's at about .35-50 loss of BC in same weight/style bullets ...IE not as efficient past 400 yards.
7-08: Never owned or shot one....yet...but prolly would prefer 7x57 for a low pressure low recoil better bullet choice as a Last Gun to hunt with at age 75-80+ that is now within sight and being planned for. Ron

I have both and handload for both. Until recently however, I had never owned or used a .270. That has changed and now I REALLY like both for my purposes which is hunting deer and hog sized game at less than 400 yards. The differences between the two seem pretty semantic to me. I could grab either one at a moment's notice to go hunt and be completely confident.

How many of these same caliber threads are you going to start?

I like the 7mm-08 because it's a softer shooter.
Where the 7mm-08 feels "almost like" a 243; the 270 feels "almost like" a 30-06.

Again you haven't shot or seen what it can do so you don't have experience just what you have read You are wrong about 708 not being available in the ammo craze. It was readily available all the time. Academy is so so for ammo and walmart is terrible except for price.

Check the ballistics again with a 162 gr A-max or a 168 gr Berger VLD Hunting, with 2750 fps.

i say .270. ammo cheap and any where. it will do the job on anything. how often would you be shooting over 300 yards? i bet you will shoot more at less then 300yds. very big selecton of companys to choose from. and i think alot has to do with shot placement. get the right shot placement and any cal will do the job. good luck

A mix of them both.... .280.

Not to get involved with this pissing match, but I couldn't find 7-08 for a while in dfw either. It did last longer than .308, but 7 mag and .270 remained on the shelf around my area. Currently, I can't get 7-08 brass and haven't for a while. I'm also waiting for the .284 amax's to get back into production. My 4'10" sis in law and I have both killed deer with 7-08. My bro in laws have taken deer with a .270. They work just as well as the .257 bob my wife uses and the old worn out 8mm mauser I also use. Threads like this are really just splitting hairs for most people because there are many cartridges that work equally well for the relatively short distances most will shoot. In other words, the person behind the gun (including me) is usually the limiting factor of most cartridges.

I only hunt deer in Kansas. I shoot 7mm-08.....my son shoots .308.....my son-in-law and his family shoot .270. All 3 guns get it done very easily and reliably. End of story.

The 7-08 will kill them just as dead as a .270. I have both and have been shooting the 08 this season and have killed everything I've pulled the trigger on. The only downside to the 08 is if you don't reload ammo is around 50% higher and harder to find.

I'm a 7mm fan myself but either will do what you need.

Ok guys I swear this is my last thread before I pull the trigger on one or the other. They look almost identical on ballistics charts to about 300 or so. With those of you that have experience with either or both. What's the pros and cons you see with the calibers? I've used and loaded for both and I've often said that I would recommend one or the other to someone who asked about what gun to buy for Texas deer hunting. Buy whichever one ends up tickling your fancy the most. If you really can't decide, I'd say this: if most of your hunting is in west or south Texas go with the .270. If most of your hunting is in the Hill Country or east Texas , go with the 7-08.
If you want something done, tell a Texan its impossible
