7mm-08 or a .25-06
I got a .270 when I was 12, still shooting it and it has never let me down
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I got a Remington 700 .270 when I was 13 years old. I shot just about everything in West Texas with it and it never let me down. It was just about the perfect all around gun for deer, hogs, and varmints. When I wasn't reloading, I could always find a box of factory ammo just about anywhere; not to mention that they are one of the most inexpensive for that size rifle. Eighteen years later, I still take that rifle hunting from time to time.

.30-06 would be low on my list, Below .243, .25-06, .270, .308, 7mm-08, with .270 being top of the list..

----- Out of your list, 25-06. He'd get excellent performance with less blast and recoil, though, from .257 Roberts or 6.5x55mm. His only problem might well be his old man wanting to borrow his rifle! Comparing 6.5mm Cartridges------

Out of your choices-depends on if you want him to have a short action or long action. I prefer the 30cal options you listed, but the 25.06 has been my go to for awhile. 308 or 30/06 will be more useful for larger game should you all hunt them. I started with a 30/06 and hunted with it for 20 years before I started buying other calibers as my sons started shooting and hunting

it is up to you but my choices would be......in this order .270 .25-06 7mm08 6.5 creedmore .260
My son who started with my 7mm08 at around age 10 graduated to my .270 at age 14. when he turned 16 he got his first job, saved his money and gave it to me to buy a .30-06 for him. It pained me to buy a .30-06 but it was his money and my boneheaded dad has convinced him that it is a "real mans" gun and he had to have one........I really don't know why but I despise a .30-06, always have

7mm-08 is a great round. My 11 year old son has one and it does wonderful. Leaves more blood on the ground than my .270. Very little recoil.

I'd this is to be one of many guns, then .308. Great performance, average recoil, great availability of ammo, travels well to larger game if needed. If this is more of a single gun, then 30-06, will kill anything in North America this side of a brown bear.
