I'm not sure why so many people bash Ft Hood for hunting. It's essentially public hunting that anyone can pay to hunt on. I've met a bunch of Soldiers that have taught me some tricks and I've been able to help younger Soldiers to become better hunters as well. With central Texas duck hunting as scarce as it is I for one am thankful to have such an awesome place to be able to hunt. I've been hunting birds on post on and off since 2000 and there has certainly been an increase in duck hunters. Whether it is because of DD or what I am not sure, but the more duck hunters on post means the birds keep moving. Agreed, that only works if areas are open otherwise all 84 duck hunters are sitting in the same 4 areas and it's annoying. If you run into some young duck hunters, try to teach them some of the etiquette and some of the tricks to successful duck hunting. And if they don't listen and are total jack wagons...well, sometimes you just can't fix stupid! Have a great hunt this weekend...I'm headed to the Neches River for some flooded timber hunting. This was my limit and my dad's single woodie from post this morning. Done by 8am. Never saw another hunter.

For hood is literally right in my backyard. I started hunting there in 1998 and had about 10 good years of public hunting. The last three years I hunted there approximately nine times out of 10 I would set up on a pond have someone else come set up on the same pond with me. The amount of hunting pressure did not help for hood at all it actually really hurt the hurting. Most of small ponds only hold a few birds and really don't handle much hunting pressure.
I hunted hood for 10 years and literally know every pond sleuthing backwater spot that you can kill ducks on. Thank you for the scouting report and I was making a trip over to buy my permit next week. I love to jump shoot Teal and wood ducks and there's only a couple spots that hold that combo of birds. My advice to you be not to post up for the Internet scouters.
People like me jump shooting your Woodduck holes is not going to help you.
I would agree that while it sounds like it would help to have extra hunters on the other ponds while you're hunting. My experience is they always want to be on the same pond I wanted to be on.

How do you g about getting a permit? My stepson is stationed at the Hood. He has just really turned the flame on for duck hunting. I guess I need to get him lined out for up there. He has a couple friends that like duck hunting as well.

Nice haul. I used to hunt there in the late 90s until I moved away in 2002. I didn't hunt much in 2001-02 as it was TOUGH to get on post after 9/11. Thanks alot Bin Laden!
Larned and Engineer Lakes were my honey holes back then and I never saw another hunter. Ahhh, the good ol' days.
Good to know there is still some hunting going on.

He has a couple friends that like duck hunting as well. Pretty simple process. All he needs to do is register his firearms at the visitor center (do not bring his gun), buy his post hunting permit (all hunters must have proof of hunter education), and know the rules and regs. Once he gets past the Tele-trac sign in system it's pretty easy. As long as there are areas open, some sort of hunting is available.
