Merry Christmas to me! The girlfriend overheard a convo I had with a buddy who had just bought himself a Browning X bolt in .243. Based on my reaction she decided that she wanted to get me one too for Christmas. I did have in mind, however, buying and building a Remmy 700 SPS tac. Next year. Given the choice, which rifle would you buy? I know the Remmy has the heavy bull barrel. Not a problem. I'll chamber which ever in .308 or 7mm mag. Thoughts?

So far all of my rifles are rem 700's with the exception of 1 vanguard series 1. I have been pleased with all of them, zero complaints, but think my next rifle will be something different. Either a savage for ease of at home barrel swap or a tika ruger Winchester or browning.

I've had a factory out of the box Rem 700 BDL 7mm mag since Christmas 1981. For Christmas 1982 I got a Leupold 3X9 on it. My personal best was a seven point at 325 yds, a buddy dropped a doe at just over 400 yds with it.
Sometimes you don't have to fancy it up.

I'd give the browning X-bolt a go.

I have a stainless steel rem 700 SPS tactical In a .308, with a bell and carrelson A3 scope.. With a Nikon monarch scope, with the jeweled slide and I could not be happier with that gun! I shot the guns first buck this past weekend Down in Skidmore the groupings are amazing with the gun!

I love the 700's but one cost me a huge buck about 4 years ago and it was my fault. I had heard you cannot put a bullet into the chamber and then shut the bolt on it. I did that on my Sendero and when I pulled the trigger, "CLICK", I fed another round into the chamber but by this time I was so flustered I missed. I had been told you have to fully cycle a round from the magazine and then shut the bolt. The bullet will then be fully seated on the bolt face. I learned my lesson.

Nope, several gunsmiths told me this as well as the Remington dealer. not a defect, just has to cycle all the way.

I guess Remington must make different M700 actions for their rifles that come from the factory as single-shots, without a blind or detachable magazine.

I only hunt with Rem 700. When I sight them in I drop one round at a time in the chamber and bolt it forward, never loading the magazine. I have never had a missfire.
