I recently have been given a 6MM Remington rifle. Never hunted, shot, or even handled a 6MM. Just wondering what it compares to and the best type of game for this rifle.

Hot 243.
Great cartiage, only issue is finding ammo, so once you find some buy 4 boxes.

Ditto. It's a 243 on steroids. My very first deer rifle was a 6mm Remmy 700 which is in the hands of my kid brother now. Recently got a Remmy 788, followed by some Barnes TTSX reloads and a Timney trigger. So I am set. I used to use 100 grain Corelokts and they worked well in terms of accuracy and results on critters.

I have a Rem 742 in 6mm.....love that gun. Think I ran 80 and 100 grain ammo through it. Killed MANY animals from pigs to west Tex mulies with it. Very flat shooting with punch. Hit a mulie one time right behind shoulder at almost 300yd. Dropped like a sack of feed

Correct, it's a little faster than the 243 Win, if loaded right. The issue with that caliber was when it first came out, was the rifles chambered in it had too slow of a twist to stabilize the heavier .243" bullets. Winchester came out with the 243 Win with heavier bullets and faster twist barrels, and the 243 Win was a big success. If you find 6mm Rem ammo or brass, save it. Do not leave it on the ground. It can be reloaded many times.

6mm was my first deer rifle. Hand loaded 105 grains in it and killed a lot of deer with that rifle. Still have it today.

This yote was shot this morning with a Rem 700 VLS in 6mmRem. The last 2 bucks shot with it using 100gr corlokts didn't exit so I switched to Hornady 100gr btsp and I'm very pleased with the results so far. Haven't got to try them out on a deer or pig yet tho...
No doubt about the AR crap, just damn shame hunters don't have self control and knowledge

You won't have any issue hunting with a 6mm. My dad gave his to my son and it is a deer dropping bullet. Very easy on the shoulder, you can shoot it all day and not feel it. My neighbor used a 6mm on his elk hunt. He dropped a cow in her tracks with his 6mm.
Enjoy it!

I once owned a Rem 788 6mm. I read somewhere that it was equivalent to a .236 caliber.

Horrible round... it's not suitable for any game animals.
I think you should sell it immediately, I'd be willing to take it off your hands so you don't have to bother with it.
Obviously I'm kidding. I've had two 6mm's in use since the early 70's, dropped everything from groundhogs to elk with em. "Not perfect for either one" but just about everything in between, it's that versatile... Think of it as a slightly souped up .243

6mm was my first deer rifle. Hand loaded 105 grains in it and killed a lot of deer with that rifle. Still have it today. Same here. Shot my first deer when I was 10 years old with it, and every deer afterwards until about 4 years ago when I changed rifles. It's plenty lethal.

Love my Remington 600 6mm. It now sports a Shilen #3 contour barrel and is a tack driver. It has dumped a lot of critters since I got it back in 89. It's been from South Texas killin hogs, javelinas and yotes to the Oklahoma Panhandle whacking PD's and whitetails.

Ask and .243 owner familiar with the Remington 6mm about one and they will tell you the two are about the same. Ask anyone who has owned and shot a Remington .244/6mm and you will get a very different answer. The 6mm has character and personality. if the owner of a .243 gets rid of one, the attitude is ...Meh...I can always get another. It is rare for someone who has let a 6mm get a way not to regret it. Most times you cannot pry them away from the owner. my 788 is 6mm is scary accurate. All shoot better than I am capable of. the best and most accurate deer load for my .244 is 100 gr Sierra which according to the experts is not supposed to stablize in the slow twist barrel. Guess mine never got that memo. Yeah, the Remington 6mm is a .243 and a little bit more. I recommend you try the cult of the 6mm, Come on in, have a little kool aid and see what you think. I don't think you will be disappointed

It's been from South Texas killin hogs, javelinas and yotes to the Oklahoma Panhandle whacking PD's and whitetails. I have exactly that same rifle, but with the stock factory barrel. It's basically a .243 that's been pumping iron at the gym. I took my first 30" muley, on the Paunsagunt, with it and the 100gr Nosler PT.

My first deer rifle was a converted German Mauser .244/6mm. Still have it and love the rifle. Take driver, but it is getting much harder to find ammo. The Remington Core-Lokt is about the only one that is readily available, but I am not a big fan of particular brand.

6mm is really pretty easy to reload. Started out shooting a Remington 722 in .244. After putting the 6mm in production, Remington decided to discontinued the Remington ammo in 90 gr loads. 75 gr seemed a little too small for deer and the 100 gr were not "supposed" to shoot well in a 1:12 twist barrel. The only way to get 90 gr loads were to reload. We had a Lee hand loader. You would resize the neck by hammering the cartridge into the die. Then put one level scoop of the correct powder for the bullet (load combinations provided with the lee loader) tap in the bullet and you were good to go. I have since moved to a reloading press and I am convinced you can make loads as good or better than you can buy. There is some initial investment but it doesn't have to be that expensive with the benefit of getting to shoot more as you work up loads.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I found a Rem. Mohawk 600 in 6mm on the shelf at the LGS about 30 years ago. I already had one in .308 so I knew that they were good guns. I bought it and took it to the range. The previous owner had installed a rear peep sight that I had trouble adjusting. Once I got it sighted in with factory ammo it would shoot 3/4" groups all day long. It will still shoot better than I can see. I had to replace the peep sight with a scope to accommodate my old eyes, but that just helped my accuracy.
This little rifle has been the one used to take their first deer for all of my kids and two of my grandkids. My oldest daughter has already said that if that rifle ever leaves my hands, it better be coming to her. Not sure why Remington discontinued it, but they lost a great rifle.
